Pull List Roundtable 12/13/2017 – Rumble #1, Monstro Mechanica #1, Mister Miracle #5 & More

  • Action Comics #993 – Booster Gold! Maybe this will mean Booster is here in Rebirth to stay? Though the Blue Beetle series was cancelled, I’d like to see those two team up again.
  • Mister Miracle #5 – I agree with the masses; this one of DC’s best books right now. And if we can’t get an ongoing series after this 12-issue run, can we get more Barda somewhere please? She’s been my favorite part so far, especially last issue.
  • Port of Earth #2 – I’ve been looking forward to this series since it’s original announcement, and I liked the first issue even more than I thought I would. This could be a new favorite series for me.
  • Rumble #1 – Interesting choice to start over with a new number one, as it sounds like it’s still a continuation of the last series, though “in a new direction” and with a new artist. Either way, I’m on board.
  • Star Wars #40 – I’ve only read up to issue #38 so far, but Kieron Gillen’s first issue of the arc/series was very good and I’m interested to learn more about Jedha and Saw Gerrera’s crew.
  • The Wicked + The Divine Christmas Annual #1 – A bit of extra fun for the holidays and break between arcs. Who doesn’t love holiday specials?
  • Other issues I’m looking forward to:
  • Coyotes #2
  • Detective Comics #970
  • Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #34
  • Jughead: The Hunger #2
  • New Super-Man #18
  • Royal City #8
  • Samurai Jack: Quantum Jack #3
  • The Flash #36
  • The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #27
  • Wonder Woman #36

  • Dead Orbit #4 – I’m so glad that James Stokoe’s Aliens series is finally ending – I was worried I’d just missed the last issue. Now I guess we know why Orc Stain is so late…
  • Maestros #3 – I’m not sure why I almost skipped out on Steve Skroce’s newest series; it’s well written and absolutely gorgeous.
  • Mister Miracle #5 – Is anyone bored of everyone hyping this book yet? There’s really little else as good on the stands.
  • Rumble #1 – I’m glad to see that John Arcudi is bringing back his strange fantasy series, and while I like the new artist, David Rubín, I would be happier if original artist James Harren was still on this book. I’ve missed it though, so I’m glad it’s back.

Matt Graham: “Mister Miracle is so good, it’s the only unobscure non indie AV Club put on their greatest comics of 2017.”- AV Club, probably

  • Vampirella #9 – Well, damn. This series wasn’t solicited as a limited series until this week, when it’s 9 of 11. Dynamite’s done this before. Issue 7 marked the transition from write Paul Cornell to Jeremy Whitley, who took over in full on issue 8. Now with 9 we’re told it ends at 11. There was talk among the fan base that Cornell’s run didn’t execute as he wanted, and felt redirected. With that rumour in mind, I have to wonder why they assigned a new writer for only four issues rather than start the next volume. I hope Vampirella returns later in 2018, as the revival with Simone, Leth, Cornell, and now Whitley has been great.
  • True Believers Phoenix Classic #1; True Believers Phoenix Returns #1- Not the most mainline of Phoenix things to reprint, but perhaps it holds clues to Jean’s return. Heck, Phoenix Returns reprints Fantastic Four #286 – maybe the F4 will be back. No? Okay, but we do still have this Not Valeria Who is Valeria.
  • All-New Wolverine #28
  • Cable #152
  • Daredevil #596
  • She-Hulk #160
  • X-Men Blue #17

  • BUG THE ADVENTURES OF FORAGER #6 – I hate that this series is just a mini-series. One of my favorite comics each and every month…but I would pretty much buy anything Mike Allred is involved in anyway. Hopefully we can get another BUG mini-series next year.
  • DUCKTALES #4 – While a little formulaic (story starts with Donald suffering some horrible result because of Scrooge and Della’s actions, then we get the whole story), I have really enjoyed seeing stories of Scrooge, Della, and Donald’s past adventures. I thought this was just going to be new stories with Scrooge and the kids, but this comic is something else entirely and it’s been great.
  • ACTION COMICS #993 – Continuing the countdown to the 1000th issue. Making a prediction here. As much as I love Jurgens work here, I am thinking it’s very likely Bendis will be taking over this book after 1000. I would be very curious what a Bendis Superman book would be like. As for this issue itself, BOOSTER GOLD IS BACK!!! Dan Jurgens writing Booster Gold again is always a good thing.
  • PUNISHER #219 – While I still don’t know how I feel about Punisher as War Machine, I really enjoyed the first issue of this run. It’s a very different take on the Punisher, and I am real curious where the series goes from here. Definitely one of the most interesting books to come out of Marvel Legacy.
  • MONSTRO MECHANICA #1 – Another crazy new book coming from Aftershock Comics. Loved the solicit for this one: A new series starring Leonardo da Vinci, his female apprentice, Isabel, and their wooden robot! At the height of the Renaissance, warring factions vie for control of Leonardo da Vinci’s destructive arsenal. The only thing standing in their way is Leonardo’s young apprentice and her nine-foot tall mechanical bodyguard. Together, they navigate a world of wicked men and war machines, determined to save Leonardo from the world—and the world from Leonardo.
  • MISTER MIRACLE #5 – Tom King is a great fit on this book. Nothing at all what I expected, and that makes for one of the best comics DC is putting out right now. Definitely worth checking out..and re-reading over and over again to put all the piece together.
  • RUNAWAYS #4 – Man, this series is moving so damn slow. It’s well written and a great addition to RUNAWAYS story, but I keep finding myself hoping that it picks up the pace.
  • JUGHEAD THE HUNGER #2 – Last week, Archie announced that we will be getting a new “Veronica as a vampire” series. It seems like instead of working to get the horror line books back on some kind of reasonable schedule, they are just going to pump out new books. Not sure that is the best solution. That said, I’ve really enjoyed JUGHEAD THE HUNGER. Like AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE, it is a very different take on the characters, but it works really well.
  • WONDER WOMAN #36 – I know a lot of people have been down on James Robinson’s WONDER WOMAN, but I have really enjoyed it so far. I loved that we even got a Times Past issue. The last year or so, Robinson has been producing his best work since STARMAN.
