DC Comics Universe and Dark Nights Metal #5 Spoilers and Review follows.

Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman…

…Wage War To Save Hawkman…

…and Hawkgirl Lady Blackhawk?!

The book opens with Wonder Woman in battle with Black Adam. The avatar of Shazam has made a pact with Barbatos for his own slice of Earth to rule once the Dark Knights of the Dark Multiverse take over. In the wings is the new Lady Blackhawk, actually Kendra Saunders who was formerly Hawkgirl in the DC Rebirth continuity. She is the thrall of Barbatos whereas Black Adam seems to have made his own choice to follow the dark Bat-god of the Dark Multiverse.

At the same time, Batman and Superman are in battle with the Hawkgod avatar who is actually Carter Hall, formerly Hawkman, who has been turned and consumed by Barbatos. The Forge is dark, but…

…the return of Hawkman may the key to reigniting the Forge and saving Earth!

Still in battle with Black Adam, Wonder Woman gets her hands on Hawkman’s Nth Metal, aka Ninth Metal, mace and…

…fells the magic-powered anti-hero, but is…

…shot in the head by a bullet from the Batman Who Laughs; a bullet made of Eighth Metal which is what the invisible jet of WW is made of allegedly.

Aquaman and Deathstroke are on their own mission to save the Earth, but are confronted by Black Manta. Like Black Adam, he has made a bargain with Barbatos to rule parts of Earth that will be flooded in the new world order. Manta brings some of the Dark Knights of the Dark Multiverse to take on Deathstroke and Aquaman.

Green Lantern, Mister Terrific and returned Martian Manhunter (spoilers here) have found the Phoenix Cannon which was created to exploit the Nth Metal at Earth’s core to save the world if it ever was overtaken by the dark. However, it has be reconfigured by Barbatos’ forces to bring the dark instead!

The cannon, the mace, and Batman and Superman seem to be big keys to what comes in the finale…

…as Wonder Woman now battles Lady Blackhawk and…

…with her magic lasso of truth frees her from Barbato’s influence.

The return to Earth only to see it overrun by Barbato’s dark multiverse forces and doppelgängers of heroes and villains of the main DC Rebirth era Earth.

The ladies enter the fray, with all hope against them, as the Earth needs them!

Up next is the Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt #1 one-shot…

…followed by the conclusion to this epic in Dark Nights: Metal #6.

So…

Dark Nights Metal #5 was another trippy rock’n issue with the conventional DC Comics playbook out the window. It’s entertaining, compelling and impactful. Writer Scott Snyder, penciller Greg Capullo and team work hard to make this multi-layered and ambitious story resonate and relatable. 8 out of 10.
