Matt Graham

This week sucks if you like not spending money.

  • Mother Panic Batman Special #1
  • Dejah Thoris #1
  • Witchblade #3
  • Daredevil #598
  • Hawkeye #15
  • Rogue and Gambit #2
  • She-Hulk #162
  • X-Men Gold #21
  • X-Men Red #1
  • Extremity #11
  • Legenderry Red Sonja #1 – I like Red Sonja. I don’t care for steampunk. Hm. I didn’t read the 2013 series for this same reason, but maybe I should look into it.
  • Paper Girls #20 – I swear this book used to come in arcs with breaks, but now every month I look a new one is out. Not a complaint.
  • No. 1 With a Bullet #4 – I like this book. The art is interesting and stylish from the linework to the camera angles to the colors. The story has a compelling protagonist and, as of 2 and 3, side characters and antagonists with peeling layers that add to the story. The whole voyeurism and harassment theme is topical. Too topical.

That’s why I’m bailing on this series after last issue, but I’d still recommend it – I’ll check back for the trade, perhaps. It’s a story I want to read, yet it’s a story I’m getting on every newsfeed anytime I open a browser, turn on the television, or hear the DJs ramble between songs on the radio. It’s exhausting to keep up with, and I’d rather follow the conversations in the real world than pay $3.99 to hear it echoed during my detox time. It’s interesting timing that this title launched when it did.

  • Armstrong and the Vault of Spirits – I’d rather see Fred Van Lente do something sustained at Valiant with the Anni-Padda brothers, but I’ll take what I can get.
  • Twisted Romance #1 – I’m a big fan of Alex DeCampi and her output of the last few years, so I’m all in for this weekly February series. Each issue of this four-issue comic tells a single story, anthology style, with a different artist, and it sounds cool and experimental, which is what DeCampi does best. I’d be happier with more No Mercy, but still…
  • Vs #1 – I don’t know much about this. I like Brandon Thomas. I like Esad Ribic a whole lot. It seems like a safe purchase.
  • The Wicked + The Divine 1923 – I like these one-off stories that show earlier eras in the WicDiv universe, and am excited to see Aud Koch’s art on it, after he impressed me on The Ultimates.
  • X-Men Red #1 – I haven’t read Phoenix Resurrection #5 yet (thanks Diamond), but I’m ready to start reading a regular X-Men book again, and hope that Tom Taylor is the writer that makes me want to. I like the lineup on this title, and so am hopeful.

Matt: Oh cool, I didn’t know about Twisted Romance.

James: Carla Speed McNeil on the last issue!

Matt: Even better.

  • X-MEN RED #1 – Jean Grey’s team of X-Men…not quite sure why Jean needs her own team, but I love the team and Tom Taylor writes great comics, so I am definitely on board as a customer here. Curious if we are going to see both Jeans in this book, since at the end of PHOENIX RESURRECTION they are both alive again.
  • INFINITY COUNTDOWN ADAM WARLOCK #1 – Apparently this was supposed to be GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #151, but they changed it last minute. I grew up on Starlin’s SILVER SURFER and INFINITY WATCH so I love Adam Warlock. I am actually really looking forward to INFINITY COUNTDOWN. I am assuming that this will lead to him appearing in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR.
  • EXIT STAGE LEFT: THE SNAGGLEPUSS CHRONICLES #2 – I was not ready for the first issue of this, which was a pretty indepth look at McCarthyism and how it targeted Hollywood. DC has done such a great job subverting all expectations with their Hanna-Barbera books. JETSONS and the last issue of DASTARDLY AND MUTTLEY also come out this week.
  • BATMAN #40 – Last issue of BATMAN was a bit odd. Batman and Wonder Woman found themselves keeping a promise to allow the Gentle Man a day off from his eternal war against something or another. But they have quickly discovered that time flows different in his world and that day has lasted for years and years. At the end of the issue, Batman and Wonder Woman share a kiss, which has had a lot of people questioning whether Batman and Catwoman’s relationship is over. I doubt it since DC is already promoting the wedding happening in July…
  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #795 – Nathan Osborn as Carnage…really?? I actually hate that Marvel keeps trying to make Norman into something he’s not. He has always been a terrifying personal threat for Peter Parker, but turning him into the head of HAMMER, a cult leader, and now Carnage actually makes him less interesting and threatening to me.
  • LEGENDERRY RED SONJA #1 – I had a lot of fun with Dynamite’s Legenderry line. I had thought they had gotten away from doing those, so it was a nice surprise to see them doing a new LEGENDERRY RED SONJA series. Basically Legenderry is one big shared steampunk world featuring new versions of characters like Red Sonja, Vampirella, and Green Hornet. I hope we get to see some more of those in this series and not just Red Sonja. GIVE US A LEGENDERRY ONGOING SERIES!
  • YOUNG MONSTERS IN LOVE #1 – I love those quirky holiday specials that DC puts out, but with a $10 price tag, I have to pass on it.
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE #38 – It’s kind of hard to get excited about Priest’s run when we just found out that it is ending after the first arc. I actually am looking forward to NO JUSTICE, but it sure hamstrings any expectations I have of Priest’s run having any real depth or lasting impact.
  • ARMSTRONG AND THE VAULT OF SPIRITS #1 – I miss having an ongoing ARCHER AND ARMSTRONG series, but at least we get Armstrong in a one-shot. Come on Valiant! SHADOWMAN is back, when are we getting A+A??
  • Monstro Mechanica #3
  • Bane Conquest #9 (Of 12)
  • Batman White Knight #5 (Of 8)
  • Black Lightning Cold Dead Hands #4 (Of 6)
  • Green Arrow #37
  • Green Lanterns #40
  • Harley And Ivy Meet Betty And Veronica #5 (Of 6)
  • Nightwing #38
  • Superman #40
  • Walt Disney Showcase #1 (Donald Duck)
  • I Hate Fairyland #16
  • Paper Girls #20
  • Witchblade #3
  • Avengers #679
  • Daredevil #598
  • Hawkeye #15
  • Rogue And Gambit #2 (Of 5)
  • Runaways #6
  • She-Hulk #162
  • Spider-Man #237
  • Spirits Of Vengeance #5 (Of 5
  • Star Wars #43
  • Venom #161

Matt: YOUNG MONSTERS IN LOVE #1? Is this related to the old Young Heroes in Love?

Mike: Not directly. Weird little Valentine’s special

YOUNG MONSTERS IN LOVE #1
U.S. Price: $9.99

It’s hard being a monster…and even harder being a monster in love. Sparks will fly and hearts will be broken when the ghouls and ghosts of the DC Universe assemble to bring you the Valentine’s Day Special that no one saw coming!

Matt: Man, remember when DC gave you 80 pages of Countdown for a buck?
