Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson headlining a comic thriller called Red Notice for 2020! This is wonderful news. In her first starring role outside of playing Wonder Woman as part of the DC Universe, Gadot has signed on to star opposite Johnson in an upcoming summer blockbuster written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber.
Thurber, who worked with Johnson on Central Intelligence (co-starring Kevin Hart) and the upcoming Skyscraper (which looks like a one-legged man in a Die Hard meets The Towering Inferno popcorn movie), got a lot a traction for his original script as multiple studios got into a bidding war. Universal won out and it may very well have them laying the smackdown on the competition as it has essentially doubled down with Dwayne Johnson. Up first in 2019 is the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, with Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles from the billion-plus franchise.
Now with Red Notice and the combination of Gadot and Johnson (plus another male lead to be named), Universal looks to have three projects that will be big earners in the first half of 2020. Also included is the ninth installment in the F&F franchise (April 10, 2020) and a sequel to Minions (July 3, 2020).
While there is no official logline, Thurber’s movie involves globe-trotting, action and comedy, and a heist. Seeing how well Ocean’s 8 performed its opening weekend, audiences may very well latch on to a heist involving Gadot and Johnson.
Production is set to begin in April 2019 for a June 12, 2020 release.
