Features, Interviews, Top Story, Video

A Canadian actress is making waves south of the border.

Ellen Wong got her first taste of stardom after playing Knives Chau in 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The actor went on to pick up roles in The Carrie Diaries, The Void and The Circle.

The Scarborough native’s latest role is perhaps the one that she has already become the best known for. Wong plays Jenny Chey along with her alter ego ‘Fortune Cookie,’ in Netflix’s GLOW. The comedy revolves around the fictional character and gimmicks of the 1980s women’s pro wrestling circule, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.

I had the chance to catch up with actress to discuss a variety of subjects including how she prepared for the role of Jenny/’Fortune Cookie’ on the show. We also chatted about the role she played in ensuring her character on the series had a Cambodian background to match hers and if she had any concerns about playing a stereotype on the series. Ellen opened up about the portrayal of Asian-Americans on TV and discussed the differences between the first season of GLOW and its new second season.

GLOW’s second season is now available to stream on Netflix.
