  • Beasts of Burden: Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men #1 – I’m so happy to see this wonderful series back for another round, although I’m not happy to see that Jill Thompson is not with it anymore. Her art on this book, about mystical dogs that protect a small town from magical and demonic problems, has been incredible. Still, Benjamin Dewey, from Autumnlands, is probably the best possible replacement, so it should still be very good.
  • Days of Hate #7 – I love this book.
  • Royal City #14 – I’ll be sad to see this title end this week; Jeff Lemire is so good, especially when drawing his own stories.
  • Shanghai Red #3 – This series is my discovery of the summer. It’s really very good.
  • X-Men Red #7 – I sincerely hope that this title isn’t going to get shuffled away so that Marvel can have their Uncanny X-Men relaunch. Tom Taylor has made this team plausibly independent of the main X-Goings On (although maybe he needs to give them back Storm to keep his independence) and the result is the best X-Men book since Kieron Gillen left.

Phil Allen

  • Curse Words Summer Special #1 – Sizajee’s Nine head to the beach for a well-earned day off. It’s cool to get a little more “Wizord, pre-Earth” story, and gears us up to head into arc the fourth.
  • Redneck #14 – The Bowman’s get a short (and also well-earned) rest, but much is brewing deep in the heart of Texas. It’s time to learn more about the world the Bowman’s have been living in and who all the players are.
  • Royal City #14 – Series finale! Possibly my favorite Jeff Lemire solo series yet, it even comes with its own soundtrack! This is definitely one I’ll be coming back too soon.
  • I still have some catching up to do, mostly on DC books but here are a few I’m looking forward to:
  • Action Comics #1002
  • Batman Beyond #23
  • Detective Comics #987
  • The Flash #53
  • Justice League Dark #2
  • Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #23
  • The Terrifics #7
  • Wonder Woman #53

Sorry for the brief column this week, but I am just getting back from vacation and dealing with a severe injury. Hopefully will be back to normal next week,

  • DUCKTALES #11 – The season finale of DUCKTALES last week may have been the best hour of animated television I have ever seen! The tie-in comic has been the perfect companion to the show. If you re liking DUCKTALES the show as much as I have, then you owe it to yourself to check out IDW’s comic series.
  • WEST COAST AVENGERS #1 – When I was a kid, my parents would pick up packs of random comics at BJ’s for my sister and me. Because of this, I would end up reading a lot of random issues of random issues. This is why I read WEST COAST AVENGERS long before I had ever read an issue of the regular AVENGERS. WEST COAST AVENGERS was long one of my favorite series, and this new version looks like it should be a lot of fun. Definitely checking this one out.
