Before Donald Trump and fake news became the new normal, there was Gary Hart.
Sen. Gary Hart was a surefire front runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination. Then he went from surefire to under fire with the revelation of an extramarital relationship with Donna Rice. This was the moment where tabloid and political journalism came together and Hart’s campaign was overwhelmed forcing Hart to drop out of the race. In this drama from writer-director Jason Reitman, who earlier this year paired again with Academy Award winner Charlize Theron with Tully, Hugh Jackman stars as the titular Front Runner. The film also stars Vera Farmiga, Reitman’s lucky charm J.K. Simmons, and Alfred Molina.
Based on the book All the Truth is Out by Matt Bai (who shares screenwriting credit with Reitman and Jay Carson), The Front Runner will have a limited engagement beginning November 16th before expanding nationally on November 21st.
