  • Cemetery Beach #1 – While I’d rather see a return to their Trees, I’m down for a new collaboration between Warren Ellis and Jason Howard. I don’t know much about it, but expect it to be as good as their last book (and hopefully, with the added bonus of a resolution!).
  • Iceman #1 – Sina Grace’s first Iceman series was a pleasure; it was good to get a solid look at this character who has been in a supporting role for too long. I’m not sure what the reasoning behind this five-issue return engagement is – I don’t expect it to be more of a sales success – but I’ll take it.
  • MCMLXXV #1 – I’ve reached a sadly cynical place in my life where I no longer get excited about a new Joe Casey series, and have started skipping swaths of his work, but I’m intrigued by this new title with Ian MacEwan. I’m going to give it a hard look at the store and maybe bring it home with me.
  • I’m also looking forward to new issues of The Seeds, Farmhand, New World, Oblivion Song, Daredevil, and Darth Vader.

Mike “Ace” Maillaro

  • Moth and Whisper #1 – Another unique series coming from Aftershock. I don’t know the creative team at all, but the premise has “ACE WOULD LOVE THIS” written all over it. “Everyone knows that the two greatest thieves in the city are the Moth and the Whisper. Very few know that the Moth and the Whisper disappeared six months ago. And what nobody knows is that the new Moth and Whisper are actually one person pretending to be both of them. One supremely skilled but uncertain young genderfluid thief: Niki, the child of the Moth and the Whisper.

Niki has been trained by their parents in the arts of stealth and infiltration, but they’re still just a teenager, and now they’re alone, searching for their parents in a hostile cyberpunk dystopia. Corporations run the streets while crime lords like Ambrose Wolfe run the alleys-identity is a commodity and privacy is impossible. The truth about Niki’s parents and their disappearance is out there, but can Niki survive long enough to find it?

A YA cyberpunk thriller starring a genderqueer super-thief, MOTH & WHISPER is the brainchild of Ted Anderson (My Little Pony, Adventure Time) and Jen Hickman (Jem and the Holograms, The Dead), that just HAD to be told at AfterShock!”

  • Archie 1941 #1 – Mark Waid gives us an Archie series set in the 1940’s. Not sure how fun an Archie series set during World War 2 could be, but I have really enjoyed Waid’s run on Archie, and the premise does sound unique enough. Might as well check it out. Sure beats waiting for the next issue of Afterlife with Archie or Sabrina.
  • House of Whispers #1 – While this is probably the Sandman spinoff I am least hyped for, I am real curious about the voodoo feel to it. If nothing else, it seems different from any other comic out there, and that is always a good thing to me.
  • Fantastic Four #2 – I have said before that I hate a team book where you don’t get the whole team together by the end of the first issue. The first issue felt like a lot of setup. It had some really great moments, but I will would have loved to have had the whole team back together by the end of the first issue. The Doom backup just felt like wasted space instead of giving us more focus on the Fantastic Four characters. I know I am just being pouty, but between Fantastic Four #1 and too many issues of Marvel 2-in-1, I am tired of being teased. Give us back a real FF now!
  • Journey into Mystery: The Birth of Krakoa #1 – Maybe it is just because I am a huge nerd, I love books that fill in gaps that you don’t even realize exists. An origin story of Krakoa? Why not!
  • Runaways #13 – Really loving this new series of Runaways. Runaways still has a lot of surprises for this old school Runaways fan.
  • Hot Lunch Special #2
  • Volition #2
  • Catwoman #3
  • Detective Comics #988
