Sony Pictures has announced that its summer sleeper Searching, a mystery-thriller for the digital age, will debut on Digital beginning November 13, followed with a Blu-ray release on November 27. Aneesh Chaganty, making her feature debut as writer-director, frames this missing persons story using the Internet and social media platforms as a father (John Cho) pries into his daughter’s private (“social”) life to aid in a police investigation to find her.
Chaganty takes what would be a by-the-numbers thriller and elevates it to unseen levels thanks to a blend of innovative storytelling with modern technology. To expand on the genesis behind Searching the Blu-ray includes three featurettes (“Changing The Language Of Cinema”, “Update Username: Cast And Characters”, and “Searching For Easter Eggs”). Chaganty and co-writer/producer Sev Ohanian also sit down for an audio commentary.
After David Kim (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.
