Blu-Ray Review: The Last Ship (The Complete Fifth Season)

Blu-ray Reviews, Reviews, Top Story

TNT really went big when they debuted The Last Ship back in 2014. The drama about 80 percent of the world’s population being wiped out by a mystery bug first aired in 2014. The crew of the USS Nathan James guided missile destroyer is the only ship in the navy that wasn’t infected. These sailors are the best hope for humanity to find a cure and keep order in the chaos. The show provided that action expected from a show that featured Michael Bay (The Rock) as an executive producer. The Last Ship: The Complete Fifth Season shows that even after they had defeated the Red Rust Epidemic, people just can’t play nice.

Three years after being devastated, the US Navy is proud to display it’s new fleet of military vessels. However the celebration goes extremely bad. Turns out Gran Colombian Empire and their leader Tavo isn’t going to let the USA become the big dog in the hemisphere without a fight. In response to their attack, the crew of the USS Nathan James reunite for one last mission to restore order and get revenge on Tavo. The film isn’t all action. There’s plenty of diplomacy as the USA does its best to get Mexico and Cuba on their side and not give into the message of Tavo that the USA has abused these countries for centuries.

Because the producers knew in advance that this was the final season of The Last Ship, the action plays out like a 10 hour movie. There’s also a strange sense that this is a reunion project since the crew is getting back together with Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy) now upgraded to Admiral Tom Chandler. The other characters have to shakedown before they can be an efficient team on the USS Nathan James. It’s kind of a Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan reunion level adventure. But it’s not a reunion since they shot all these episodes right after they made Season 4. The fifth season is completely approachable for viewers who haven’t seen the previous four seasons since it’s a new enemy and a new mission for the crew.

Along with The Last Ship: The Complete Fifth Season, there’s also The Last Ship: The Complete Series on both Blu-ray and DVD.

The video is 1.78:1 anamorphic. The transfer really lets you appreciate the work of the production design staff since the episodes look summer blockbuster movie worthy. The audio is English and French. The subtitles are in English, French, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish.

Digital Copy of all the episodes.

Inside the Last Ship (17:42) includes segments on the fifth season, Captain Kara’s Log, Off the Grid, From Script to Screen and Bon Voyage. They tackle the enemies and the changes in the characters.

Tales From The Bridge (44:11) reunites the actors and crew nearly a year after the show wrapped to talk of their adventures on the USS Nathan James.
