“War of the Realms”
Welcome to the column where I break down the latest Marvel event, War of the Realms.
From the award-winning Mighty Thor team of Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman and Matthew Wilson, War of the Realms is an epic crossover event that will enlist every great Marvel hero to save Earth and beyond from complete annihilation.
Now I have to be stating the obvious here, Marvel events in recent years have not been good; they are choppy delayed and quite boring and they have no real buildup or a stolid story.
Then why can this be good?
“The story really begins when that war that’s been brewing for years in the pages of Thor explodes here in Midgard,” teases Aaron. “And at that point, it’s bigger than a Thor battle – everyone becomes a part of that battle.”
“Even though this story involves a lot of moving pieces and elements from the Thor comics and the Avengers comics, it’s something that everyone can just dive into,” adds Moss.
This is why. Jason Aaron has been building and setting up the pieces for this event for a very long time. He has been writing the thor books for a quite a while and he has claimed that this is the culmination to his run. Whatever new and exciting storylines he had set up will play into this book.
Aaron definitely goes into this book having a lot of experience and as a person who will go down as one of the better Thor writers. He is being joined on this book by Russell Dauterman which means this book is gonna be hella gorgeous however the story goes. His involvement is one of the reasons why I am really hyped for this event.
It deals with MALEKITH THE DARK ELF having created his own bifrost and invading the various realms one by one. By the time the event starts , the only realm remaining will be midgard. So when Malekith decides to bring his army to Earth, the story starts.
This story has been said to reach the level of Secret Wars in consequences. Interpret that as you will, but it is definitely having a major impact on the thor characters and the whole Asgardian mythology of Marvel Comics.
It deals with the Avengers and every damn character in the Marvel mythos dealing with this army and getting to join this fantastical battle for the fate of their planet.
The solicit for the first issue reads as:
THE WORLD AT WAR! Asgard. Alfheim. Heven. Jotunheim. Muspelheim. Niffleheim. Nidavellir. Svartalfheim. Vanaheim. All of the Ten Realms have fallen to Malekith and his army except one: Midgard. Home to Thor’s beloved humans. Home to heroes and gods alike. Now, at last, it burns. And Thor won’t even be there to see it. All hell breaks loose in New York City as Malekith and his allies begin their invasion — and the greatest heroes of the Marvel Universe watch as the Earth falls!
This comic releases on the 3rd of April 2019 and I hope Aaron brings his run to the epic conclusion that he wants to have and gives a good event in the process. I hope it is the big brawling action event that we have been promised and it is handled carefully. there is already a bevy of unneeded tieins but if the main series achieves a distinct level of quality, then the tie-ins won’t necessarily bring it down. With Aaron and Dauterman, I am not too worried.
