Fantastic Fest Celebrates Its Quinceanera With A Loaded First Wave Lineup

News

Fantastic Fest – the biggest genre film festival in North America. Fourteen years and counting. 2019 marks the fifteenth edition of the acclaimed festival, and today they dropped an atomic bomb of genre goodness by announcing its first wave of titles. Among the anticipated titles is Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok encore, the anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit, plus new films from Jim Mickle (Cold in July, the Sundance series Hap & Leonard) and Vincenzo Natali (Splice), and a special appearance by the one and only Takashi Miike, who is coming to Austin to unveil his latest, First Love!

The fun doesn’t stop there, as the fest will give us a quartet of mind-bending features from around the globe helmed by female filmmakers. From Greece, Rinio Dragasaki gives the world a taste of her Cosmic Candy; Austria’s Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska present a different kind of zombie invasion with the North American premiere of Die Kinder Der Toten; Italian filmmaker Sara Summa explores the final day of a family in harrowing detail in The Last to See Them; and lastly, America’s own Jennifer Reeder presents Knives and Skin, about a high school torn apart by a missing cheerleader.

A cinematic classic and a cult classic are analyzed in documentary fashion as the festival presents Memory: The Origins of Alien and You Don’t Nomi, which delves into the Paul Verhoeven’s infamous Showgirls.

Finally, AGFA (American Genre Film Archive) diversifies the programming with world premieres of new restorations of Bloody Birthday, The McPherson Tape, Reflections of Evil, and a brand-new 4K restoration of the “gore cut” of Tammy and the T-Rex.
