Gamera: The Complete Collection Rises Up In August

Japan might have been known as “The Land of the Rising Sun, but to a lot of kids, the nation was “The Land of the Stomping Monsters.” Those that grew up on a steady diet of The Creature Double Feature, Japanese films that featured guys in giant rubber creature costumes stomping model cities were a Saturday afternoon thrill. In order to compete for Toho’s radioactive monstrous movies, Daiei Film brought up Gamera from a frozen wasteland in 1965. He was a giant Turtle that could fly around the world and into space. The movie proved so successful, we got 11 more installments. The turtle gained even more fans in the ’90s when five of those films were used on Mystery Science Theater 3000. A few years back Gamera made a cameo on Mad Men. Now all 12 films have been upgraded to 1080p and brought together on Arrow Video’s Gamera: The Complete Collection. In edition to the original run of eight Gamera films, the boxset contains the ’90s trilogy and the last installment Gamera: The Brave. The dozen films are spread over 8 Blu-ray discs. They’ve even dug up the original American theatrical cuts of the the first two movies. Here’s the press release from Arrow Video with all the bonus feature details:
