There are times when a genre film crosses over from the grindhouse to the art house. Daughters of Darkness arrived in 1971, movie goers that were used to Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee were treated to a new set of fangs. Countess Bathory lurked around a nearly empty resort hotel with her secretary. The only other guests is a newlywed couple that get too close to the Countess. The film is extremely artsy especially in casting Delphine Seyrig as the countess. The actress was an art house icon having been in Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad, François Truffaut’s Stolen Kisses and Luis Buñuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. This sophisticated grace was reflected in the film’s approach to the vampire action. Now the film is getting a major upgrade to 4K UHD Blu-ray. Here’s the press release from Blue Underground:

International screen icon Delphine Seyrig (LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD) stars as Elizabeth Bathory, an ageless Countess with a beautiful young ‘companion’ (Goth goddess Andrea Rau) and a legendary legacy of perversion. But when the two women seduce a troubled newlywed couple (Canadian beauty Danielle Ouimet and John Karlen of DARK SHADOWS and CAGNEY & LACEY), they unleash a frenzy of sudden violence and depraved desire that shocked both art house audiences and grindhouse crowds worldwide.
