Netflix Unveils A Preview Of Their 2021 Slate Of Movies

Columns, News, Top Story

For the most part last year, very few people got their movies from the theaters, and instead turned to streaming to watch the latest movie. While the pandemic is still going, some theaters have opened back up and as of right now, there are major blockbusters scheduled to be released throughout the year. However, Netflix doesn’t want you to forget that you can do a great deal of movie watching right from the comfort of your couch.

A few days ago Netflix released a trailer highlighting the onslaught of Netflix original movies that are scheduled to be released on the platform this year. With Netflix promising at least one new movie every week in the year 2021, this isn’t even half of what they intend to release this year, but here’s a quick breakdown of the titles that were highlighted in the video.

The Harder They Fall – Starring Regina King and Idris Elba, this western features a revenge plot and it looks like Elba is going to be playing the villain of the movie.

Thunder Force – Starring Melissa Mcarthy, and directed by her real life husband, it’s a superhero comedy where McCarthy and Octivia Spencer play childhood friends who discover a way to gain superpowers and protect the city overrun with super villains.

Bruised – It’s Halle Berry’s directorial debut. A sports drama about a retired female MMA fighter trying to restart her career.

Tick, Tick Boom – Lin Manuel Maranda wrote and starred in both Hamilton and In the Heights, but he’s never directed a musical movie before this one. It’s based on the musical written by Jonathan Larson who also wrote Rent

The Kissing Booth 3 – It’s the third (and theoretically last) movie in the Kissing Booth series that was teased at the end of the second movie last year. Elle is about to go to college, but can’t decide what school she’s going to. The one with her boyfriend or the one with her BFF.

To All The Boys: Always and Forever – It’s the other teen trilogy coming to a close with the main character, Laura Jean, finishing high school and looking forward to the next chapter in her life and what her life and relationships will look like after graduation.

The Woman in the Window – A thriller along the lines of Rear Window Amy Adams plays a woman trapped in her own apartment who witnesses a crime through the window of her neighbor’s apartment.

Escape from Spiderhead – This drama is set in the near future with an entrepreneur who uses inmates as lab rats for his new drugs.

Yes Day – Like the title suggests, this family film is about a family where the parents promise to say yes to whatever requests the children make for a twenty-four hour period.

Sweet Girl – A revenge story, where a father vows to kill the people responsible for the death of his wife, while he protects his daughter.

Army of the Dead – Zack Snyder directed the Dawn of the Dead remake back in 2004, and he returns to the zombie genre in Army of the Dead. The main characters are using the zombie outbreak as a cover to pull off a major heist in Las Vegas.

Outside the Wire – Set in a future where robots are used as combat soldiers, Anthony Mackie stars as the most advanced android soldier yet who must stop a rogue insurgent from getting his hands on a nuclear warhead.

Bad Trip – This movie was accidentally temporarily released on Amazon Prime last year before it was announced that it would be a Netflix film. Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery star in this hidden camera show along the lines of Borat and Jackass

O2 – This claustrophobic thriller is about a woman trapped in a box with no memory of how she got there or who she even is. Then a ticking clock element is added as she starts to run out of oxygen in the box.

The Last Mercenary – An action film where a former secret agent must come to the rescue of his son who was falsely accused of drug trafficking by the government.

Kate – A revenge story featuring a criminal who has been poised. With no cure, she has twenty-four hours to take out those who are responsible for her upcoming death.

Fear Street – This will apparently be a trilogy of movies based on the horror books by R.L. Stine that were intended for an audience slightly above his famous Goosebumps series.

Night Teeth – A chauffeur is in the wrong place at the wrong time. What seems like an ordinary job driving two women around LA for a night of partying, becomes sinister, though it’s not yet been revealed what exactly is sinister about the two mysterious women.

Malcolm and Marie – Shot in black and white, this character drama was the first movie to start (and finish) production after the pandemic shutdown. Zendaya dn John David Washington star as a couple whose relationship is put to the test over the course of a single night.

Monster – Steve Harmon is honor student who is suddenly accused of commiting murder. The movie follows the legal battle that could result in Steve spending the rest of his life behind bars.

Moxie – Amy Poehler directs this teen film about a sixteen year old girl who, inspired by her mother, publishes a zine that sparks a school-wide revolution.

The White Tiger – This movie is based on the New York Times bestseller that won the Man Booker Prize in 2008. It’s the story of Balram Halwai who goes from a poor villager to one of the most successful businessmen in India.

Double Dad – Vicenza has lived with her mother in a commune her entire life, but never knowing her dad. When her mother is away, she ventures out into the real world hoping to find out who her father is.

Back To The Outback – It’s Madagascar for Australia. An animated film about a group of zoo animals trying to break out and return to their home in nature .

Beauty – An up and coming singer is confronted with a lucrative contract that will make her famous but may compromise her identity. Her family, friends, and the label all have ideas on what she should do.

Red Notice – This was the biggest showoff of the video with stars Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson introducing the entire video and more footage being shown from this movie than anything else on the list. REynolds and Gadot are two rival criminals, and it’s up to FBI profiler Dwayne Johnson to get them to work together, and work with him.
Don’t Look Up – While a lot of time was given to show off the star power Netflix had with Red Notice, their final flex of the video was showing off a movie starting both Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. They didn’t even have to show that Meryl Streep is also slated to appear in this film about two astronomers trying to warn the world about a comet that is going to destroy the planet.
