Marvel Comics and S.W.O.R.D #5 Spoilers and Review follows.

Regime Change Intergalactic Style and…

…A Traitor’s Demoralizing Trial…

…As Hellfire Gala Looms!

Fabian Cortez has been brought back to life after dying during the King in Black tie-in issue, but he will get no fanfare and go straight to a mutant council meeting.

It is starting from page 1 that Cortez is not well regarded among mutants.

The council meeting appears to be more a trail of Cortez…

…with SWORD’s Abigail Brand on hand; a trial focusing on death.

In parallel, throughout the issue, we see alien intrigue culminating with…

…S.W.O.R.D. undertaking a political assassination courtesy of Amelia Voght one-time ally of Cortez as one of Magneto’s old-school Acolytes.

The trial focuses on the death of a human and why it’s a law not kill humans for mutants.

In the end, Cortez is replaced on SWORD by Arakko’s Khora of the Burning Heart who is introduced by Voght.

We then get an “extra” SWORD’s memo about Khora.

The book ends with Cortez humiliated after participating in a trial nude…

…with the SWORD’s political assassination noted as modus operandi with…

…putting their thumbs on alien governments scale in the galaxy as an important goal of the organization.

The Pulse:

I’m curious if the endgame is to make Fabian Cortez a big villain for the X-Men considering how he was humiliated by the “good guys” in this issue. Compelling intergalactic intrigue, court drama with a Hellfire Gala tease all rendered with some pretty decent art. An entertaining issue. 8 out of 10.
