We open with a creators credits pages...

 

...while the book ends with a cryptic message.


In-between those pages we learn about the early days of the world blackout and the metamorphosis of humans into the monsters we've seen so far in the series called Shades.


That includes our lead Val Riggs and her foster brother Emory as children dealing with...

...their foster parents becoming Shades; the eyes are the revealing part here.
  

In modern day, Val and Em are ferrying an old man and his granddaughter away from...

...Blacktop Bill.
 

However, he is able to land a siphoning device on the rig and steal its energy so it can slow down; in the if grandpa leaves his journal with his granddaughter Bailey as...
 
...sacrifices himself so Bailey and our leads can get away.
 

Val aka Sundog saves Bailey from getting shot by Blacktop Bill's forces...


...while its revealed grandpa was a "Maker" and Blacktop Bill will have him kill his granddaughter implied to be by turning him into a Shade.


Later, after they escaped, Val and Bailey talk about grandpa said to Bailey...
 
...including the importance of his journal.
 
Val says she's not a hero and the book ends with her foster brother revealed to be a Shade or a Shade-in-waiting of its metamorphosis?!
