Let’s just call this “The Summer of Sparks.” The musical group with the brother Mael have been releasing records since the early ’70s. They showed in the the box office hit Rollercoaster in 1977. This summer they return in two movies. First is Edgar Wright’s documentary The Sparks Brothers that delves into their five decades of being cult recording stars. The film comes out June 18 in theaters. But Ron and Russell Mael aren’t done being a creative force as their next big project is Annette. It’s a musical movie that’s opening Cannes Film Festival. We’re finally getting their version of a Rock Opera with Adam Driver singing. The movie will be arriving in America in August in theaters and shortly thereafter on Amazon Prime. The final soundtrack collection features lyrics co-written by Sparks and Leos Carax, performed by Sparks and the cast of Annette and produced by Sparks. Of the collaboration, SPARKS say, “Initially, we conceived Annette as another Sparks album. Yet this time it would be a narrative story that would consist of three main characters, a small enough ensemble that would allow us to also present the ‘opera’ live on tour… The music, story and album were finished and ready to go, which is where the story takes a huge detour.
