Marvel Comics & Heroes Return #1 Spoilers & Review: Avengers Assemble In Heroes Reborn Finale, But What Of The Squadron Supreme Of America?

Spoilers, Top Story

Marvel Comics and Heroes Return #1 Spoilers and Review follows.

Avengers Assemble In Heroes Reborn Finale, But What Of The Squadron Supreme Of America?

The book has a few more variant covers on top of the above.

In addition to the main cover.

We finally learn who Agent Coulson and Mephisto created this alternate reality.

We also open with a creators credits page.

How Agent Phil Coulson became evil is beyond me…

…perhaps a combination of Mephisto’s influence and the Pandemonium Cube?

However, Coulson and not Mephisto appears to be THE big bad of this arc.

Even a returning Captain America turns his attention to now President Coulson while the rest of the assembled Avengers take on the Squadron Supreme of America.

Coulson is quite formidable to with his cube in hand.

An interesting moment in the battle between the Avengers and the Squadron is the combined power of the Starbrand and Phoenix to take down Power Princess.

In the end, Hyperion and Nighthawk believe that they have taken out Thor and Black Panther respectively, but the really haven’t despite their confidence and bravado.

It all leads to a high octane…

…where Coulson and the Squadron are defeated…

…with the cube seemingly destroyed…

…leading to reality being restored to what was pre Heroes Reborn.

The Squadron Supreme remember the alternate reality and we learn they, or at least Blur, may not even humans; no bellybuttons?!

The book ends with Mephisto having trapped Phil Coulson in a cube of his own…

…as he rules as THE Mephisto lording over the 615 Mephistos in the Council of Red!

Here is the final Heroes Reborn event checklist.

Next up in two weeks, on July 7, 2021, the return of the Avengers series with Avengers #46 (legacy Avengers #746) and World War She-Hulk with the return of the Winter Guard.

The Pulse:

The best issue of this event by far as the full Squadron Supreme of America was in action plus we had a superstar artist rendering the book from beginning to end. I don’t think this is the end of Mephisto’s story and I remain intrigued by Coulson and the Squadron. I give this issue an 8 out of 10. However, the core event issues were not so stellar as they were, effectively, just one-shot spotlights of each Squadron Supreme of America character. However, the last few pages of each were decent bridges to the main story that culminates here. So, the overall event, sadly, gets a 4.5 out of 10 on the strength of Heroes Reborn #1 and Heroes Return #1, but the weakness on story and art of the six intervening issues.
