“The Tower” begins! The 12-part weekly Detective Comics event starts here. Arkham Asylum has fallen, and in its place, Arkham Tower has risen in the heart of the city, a pitch made by the mysterious Dr. Wear.

Backup: “House of Gotham” begins! For a long time two houses have overlooked Gotham City, beckoning its broken: Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum.

The book opens about how we got to here.

Arkham Asylum destroyed and Arkham Tower resplendent.

The promise of rehabilitation over punishment for Gotham’s villains with mental health issues.

Doctor Wear, working with Doctor Meridian, and their first rehabilitated patient is Roy Dowd aka Nero XIX; he is an attempted murderer of the Mayor and perhaps shares some relation to Tim Drake Robin’s boyfriend Bernard Dowd?

Well, Nero XIX’s release happened on Day 7 of the new Arkham Tower era, but on Day 24 the tower is under siege from within.

The Mayor is furious and hostage negotiator is needed as part of the mix of response to what’s happening.

Doctor Wear is quite literally thrown out the window as the Batman Family scrambles to figure out what to do outside as…

…Nightwing is on the side figuring it out too.

The House of Gotham back-up story appears to focus on Nero XIX’s origins.

The Pulse:

A compelling story with amazing art for the main story. I like that they are talking about mental health issues and what to do about it. Back was engaging on story, but art style was so-so for me. Didn’t miss Batman or the Joker despite their cover placements; the Batman Family is rich with diverse, complex and fascinating characters. 7.5 out of 10.
