Superman has become a force to be reckoned with inside Warworld’s arena, and Mongul questions his decision to keep his enemies alive. As Superman’s new Phaelosian ally Kryl-Ux teaches him new ways to fight without powers, he starts to win Warzoons over to his cause…but someone within his inner circle finds their allegiances tested. Meanwhile, the elusive Midnighter uses his talents to find the missing members of the Authority.

The book opens with Superman trying to save two children, a sister and brother, from Mongul’s wrath with the Man of Steel being soundly beaten.

While some in Mongul’s inner circle want him to kill Superman, Mongul doesn’t want to make a martyr of him.

We also learn Lightray may not be dead as Omac is being manipulated to help Mongul.

At the same time Midnighter sends word to Superman that he is ready to initiate a jail break and cut power to Warworld against Superman’s wishes.

Superman and Kryl-Ux escape, but…

…realize they have been gone too long and…

…that their absence may be taken out on that sister and brother Mongul had toyed with to open the issue.

The back-up tale involves Martian Manhunter defeating a threat as…

…the Court of Vultures continues to make their moves.

The Pulse:

I do feel like the opening story is channeling the “epic” vibes, but the story felt uneven. The art was solid though. The back-up features remains an ill fit for this title. 6 out of 10.
