WHAT DID SPIDER-MAN DO?!

Peter’s on the outs with the FF. He’s on the outs with the Avengers. He’s on the outs with Aunt May! No one wants to see Spider-Man – except for Doctor Octopus. Ock’s on Spider-Man’s tail and the Master Planner has something truly terrible planned for when he gets his tentacles on Spidey. All that, and what does Tombstone have planned? Just in time for Spider-Man’s 60th Anniversary, a new volume of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN begins, and 2022 is going to be the biggest year for Spider-Man EVER! Don’t believe us? We brought John Romita Jr. back JUST FOR THIS!

56 PGS./Rated T+ …$5.99

The book opens with Peter Parker as Spider-Man in the middle of a crater.

Then we move 6 months into the future, um, into the present.

It is a present where even Pater Parker’s Aunt May believes he’s a liar, but loves him anyway.

A present where Peter Parker owes a tremendous monetary debt.

A present where he stole from the Fantastic Four.

A present where he stalks his ex-girlfriend Mary Jane Watson.

A present where Peter Parker is unemployed.

A present where Mary Jane Watson appears to live with another man and…

…has two children call her mommy?!

It’s also a present where the Rose, the Kingpin’s son, is going to war with Tombstone over NYC’s criminal underground and where Gamma irradiated villain Digger has returned in the Rose’s employ.

There’s also an epilogue that reveals…

…Doctor Octopus is captive to a seemingly new Spider-Man foil.

There’s also a message to readers from the book’s editor.

The Pulse:

I was hoping for a Chasm citing, but we know he’s coming as is a new Dark Web event of some kind that kicks off with Marvel’s Spider-Man / Venom FCBD 2022 issue (full spoilers here).

Nonetheless,  A LOT going on in this extra-sized kick-off issue. Solid story with compelling characters and intrigue that may well hook many readers. I enjoy JRJR’s art and generally would find his darker style a bit heavy for Spider-Man, but considering where the character it is this art style works. An entertaining issue with way too many variant covers.

8 out of 10.
