Flashpoint Beyond #1 opens with a bit of a catch-up for readers on the 2011 event series Flashpoint.

Then we get a cool Flashpoint Beyond Clockwork Killer logo as part of a creators’ credits page.

The story begins with a television report that reveals of what’s going on on this Flashpoint world including that eco-terrorist Emperor Aquaman who has Queen Wonder Woman’s Amazons hostage and is killing them day after day. Aquaman’s demands are simple: the world community to turn over to him their nuclear weapons and recognize Atlantis’ dominion over Earth.

The Thomas Wayne Batman is eating a meal with a young boy who turns out to be Judge Harvey Dent’s son Dexter Dent.

The Penguin is expected to entertain the boy while his boss Thomas Wayne has other business to attend to; the generally quiet Dexter Dent asks the Penguin to teach him how to shoot a gun.

Then Thomas Wayne gets his Batman gear and weapons together to confront Aquaman who he believes is responsible for bringing back the Flashpoint world.

What follows is more information what has been happening internationally at Emperor Aquaman’s hands, including the capture and torture of Queen Wonder Woman, the latter the Flashpoint Batman violently frees.

They come to an agreement over Batman’s use of Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth, that Batman needs to compel Aquaman to tell him what he’s done, but by borrowing it he would free Aquaman.

Turns out that Emperor Aquaman had nothing to do with the Flashpoint world’s return and, when Batman is done with Aquaman, Queen Wonder Woman executes her one-time regal lover.

Thomas Wayne returns to his manor to see that Dexter Dent has been having target practice and in a way redecorating a room by missing.

The book ends in the past with the Bruce Wayne Batman and the Barry Allen Flash.

They are hatching a plan that may involve hypertime and the Time Masters whether Batman wants them involved or not.

The Pulse:

An intriguing issue with lots of drama and action as well as dark humor peppered throughout sparingly yet in the right doses at the right times. Solid art by the core creative team and the flashback creative team that ends out the issue. You don’t have to have read the previous Flashpoint series or Thomas Wayne, the Flashpoint Batman’s, adventures leading to Dark Crisis, to follow this issue. It is rather accessible, entertaining and epic in scope. 8.5 out of 10.
