Great Scott! It’s a twisted time-travel tale of titanic tenure! In an attempt to get to the bottom of the mystery of the “demon,” Robin the Boy Wonder and the Supergirl of Krypton venture back in time to China circa 1600 B.C.—running headfirst into the ancient superheroes known as the House of Ji! Meanwhile, Superman and Batman are losing a race against time to save their fellow superheroes from the schemes of a new villain…one simply known as the Devil Nezha.

While Batman and Superman were able to foil Faust and get Billy Batson his mouth back, we don’t see Shazam in the issue, but Batson does get possess, for a time, by the Devil Nezha.

The Doom Patrol remains a fixture during this story arc…

…tracking down the villain General who seems more passive than once known, but…

…the Devil Nezha seems to frighten him too forcing a partnership between the Patrol and the General?!

Back in time, Robin and Supergirl, with the Devil Nezha’s sword, tangle…

…with Chinese heroes.

And, no, while there are similarities between one of these heroes to Samurai aka Toshio Eto, it cannot be him as he is Japanese not Chinese.

In the past, Robin and Supergirl’s skirmish has ended with them with new allies.

In the present, the Devil Nezha is throwing all manner of super-hero against Batman and Superman as…

…he’s corrupted Alfred Pennyworth, and is in Batman’s lair, unbeknownst to Batman.

The Pulse:

A fun issue with cool guest stars. An absurd plot and clunky dialogue at spots, but the art really raises the issue up. I don’t find Nezha that compelling or unique of a villain yet, but this book still feels hopeful not grimdark. 6.5 out of 10.
