AXE: Judgment Day #4 Spoilers follow.

A.X.E.: Judgment Day #4
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Penciler: Valerio Schiti
Cover Artist: Mark Brooks

The clock is ticking and midnight looms. It’s not too late.

We open with a storyline catch-up and creators’ credits page above and a dramatis personae below.

There is chaos and panic across the globe due to the judgments being made by the reanimated Celestial that was once the HQ of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on Avengers Mountain.

New Yorkers, and others across the globe, are also in a bit of mutant hysteria due to the revelation that mutants no longer die, the way humans do, they can come back to life due to their Resurrection Protocol via the Five.

Even Captain America is swarmed by mutant protestors, some whose anti-mutant bigotry has been reawakened and others who want the power of over death as well.

We then get several judgments revealed, the Celestial usually in a form that has a deep personal connection to the judged; we open with Luke Cage the Mayor of New York, then Professor X Charles Xavier and Doctor Doom, then Daredevil Matt Murdock and Spider-Man Miles Morales, as Starfox schemes with Sebastian Shaw, to save day day, but it requires Eros, Starfox’s other name, to speak for all of the Eternals?!

Druig, the current Prime Eternal, unleashes the Uni-Mind on everyone as part of his continuing campaign to judge the mutants as Deviants, the eternal enemies of the Eternals, but the stakes of have gone higher.

However, it is through the Uni-Mind, even with Druig freeing Uranos, the grandfather of Thanos and others, that Starfox replaces Druig as the Prime Eternal.

The devices that create portals that “vomit Armageddon” as noted by Iron Man remain a massive threat and they have been sealed by Uranos so our unified AXE heroes seemingly can’t crack them to stop them.

However, with a mortally wounded and dying Magneto joining the fray, along with Storm, and with Iron Man hacking the portal devices, Magneto makes the ultimate sacrifice (but, the Resurrection Protocols may still allow him to live) to destroy the devices and seemingly Uranos?!

Even the Eternals get judged by the Celestial followed by the planet’s judgment leading to seeming death of all!

Uncharacteristically, even Captain America loses all hope to close out the issue.

It’s too late…

In that merry Marvel manner, the issue opens with a storyline catch-up and creators’ credits page above and a dramatis personae below.

The world has been judged, the end may be here as the sentence is decided by the Celestial.

Captain America, who seemed to give up hope at the end of the last issue, is encouraged by Nightcrawler to give a piece of his noble mind, figuratively, to the Celestial; Captain America agrees and gets Bamp’d to Avengers Mountain in the North Pole, but his inspirational speech leads to his own death and that of Nightcrawler?!

Due to the Resurrection Protocol, Nightcrawler is reborn while Captain America remains dead as the combined AXE hatch a plan to kill the Celestial.

Destiny has noted that one plan will appear to work with a minor modification whatever that last part means.

The combined AXE forces attack, and even with the power of Thor, it doesn’t appear enough.

More death comes to the AXE forces as the Celestial has had enough of this rebellion.

The world will come to end because he has judged it to be so.

While the AXE forces are undeterred, as the mutants are resurrected, and perhaps Celestials rely on their perceived immortality, more planning to kill the Celestial occurs including the X-Men being able to control some of the Eternals?!

Yet, the Eternal’s Jack of Knives appears to sacrifice himself the rest of the AXE.

It is the Resurrection Protocol that is needed to bring back the hopeful hero the world needs right now.

No, not the hopeful hero Cyclops of the X-Men, but Captain America of the Avengers who appears successful resurrected leaving readers with two questions: (1) is Captain America a mutant or (2) can the Resurrection Protocols can be used on everyone not just mutants?!

As AXE: Judgment Day #5 (of 6) said it leads into AXE: Avengers #1 (of 1) which leads into AXE: X-Men #1 (of 1), both in stores now, and also bleeds into AXE: Eternals #1 (of 1), which is in stores next week on October 12, 2022, we decided to check the two issues out so far.

While the cliffhanger to AXE: Avengers #1 and ending of AXE: X-Men #1 are interesting, the books themselves don’t pick up from the Captain America resurrection, and don’t feel as essential as we’re being advised by Marvel.

Considering Starfox’s importance in the core event series, we also read the AXE: Starfox one-shot to see how connected it was to the main story and, like the other one-shots, while the story and AXE: Starfox’s cliffhanger were interesting, it didn’t feel essential.

Above is the checklist from AXE: Starfox #1 (of 1). As noted earlier, next week we’ll get AXE: Eternals #1 (of 1). The core event series ends with AXE: Judgment Day #6 (of 6) in stores on October 26, 2022 with an event Omega issue out in November 2022.

The apocalyptic finale of the event of the year. It’s not that nothing will be the same again – it’s that unless heroes can find a new way to be heroes, everything will be nothing forever.

That AXE: Judgment Day Omega #1 (of 1) is on shelves on November 9, 2022.
