Shaw Brothers was the Hong Kong studio that set the tone for martial arts in the early ’70s. The studio also had a way with weapons. They filled the screen with flashing blades as much as flying hands and feet. Their Wuxia films were major hits around the globe that were eager for more exciting fights than Hollywood cranked out. Now even more of the studio’s best films are being released in America on Blu-ray with Shaw Brothers Classics Vol. 2 arriving on August 15. The 12 films in the collection cover 1970 to 1976 when Shaw Brothers films were being screened in cinemas around the world. The boxset has more films starring Cheng Pei-pei after she became an action sensation in Come Drink With Me. You might know her from appearing in Crouching Dragon, Hidden Dragon. There are also films starring Alexander Fu Sheng (Five Shaolin Masters), David Chiang (One-Armed Swordsman), Ti Lung (A Better Tomorrow) and James Tien (The Big Boss) among other familiar faces from Shaw Brothers. The most exciting film in this collection is The Flying Guillotine. What is a Flying Guillotine? Only the most amazing weapon out of Asia. It’s like a Frisbee with a chain on it. You fling it over a person’s head, yank the chain and blades chop through their neck. That’s cooler than Ninja throwing stars. You’ll be able to enjoy plenty of mayhem when Shaw Brothers Classics Vol. 2 arrives in a few weeks. Here’s the press release from Shout! Factory with the bonus features:
