The Baseball Project & The Minus 5 hit the road for September

News, Press Releases

One of the greatest all-star bands returns just in time for the playoffs when The Baseball Project plays 17 cities along with The Minus Five as the opening act. The band features ’80s rock royalty including half of R.E.M. (Mike Mills and Peter Buck), a member of Dream Syndicate (Steve Wynn) and a member of The Young Fresh Fellows (Scott McCaughey). Drummer Linda Pitmon is also part of the supergroup Psycher. I saw them a while back with Fenway organist Josh Kantor on the keyboards. The band makes baseball as fun as watching the Savannah Bananas. This is a double header tour since the opening act is Scott McCaughey’s Minus Five featuring the other four members of the Baseball Project in his supporting band. This means don’t skip the opening act. Among the stops on the tour is Carrboro’s Cat’s Cradle. Wear your team colors and hear their new song that was made especially for the induction of Ichiro Suzuki into the baseball Hall of Fame. Here’s the details of the tour:

Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and The Baseball Project’s split 7″ consists of their respective tracks “Ichiro’s Theme” and “Ichiro Goes to the Moon”. Proceeds from the 7″ will benefit Seattle’s Teen Feed. Listen now + pre-order the 7” here.

Formed in 2007, The Baseball Project has released four albums, of songs inspired by and paying homage to the national pastime, as well as a collection of songs for ESPN.com in 2010 and an exclusive live split EP with The Minus 5 for Record Store Day in 2015. Be it songs about Major League Baseball (MLB) legends like “The Babe,” humorous and heartfelt salutes to lesser-known players like “Pasqual on the Perimeter” about Brave Pasqual Perez getting lost on the way to a game or a song like “They Played Baseball” that rattles off a whole rogues gallery of major league stars with all-too-human foibles, there are no rules as to what constitutes a baseball song…or a great rock show. They just play high energy rock shows and make damn fine rock records which honor, skewer and wax nostalgic about the grand old game.
