November journeys to Mars, Jupiter’s moon and Jim Carrey’s ID to 4K UHD from Arrow

Disc Announcements, News

Arrow Video is going make your Thanksgiving plans more than a trip to grandma’s house with a trio of movies that take you out of this world. The first is Outland. This was a film from the time when cinematic Science Fiction got dirty with Blade Runner, Alien and those Roger Corman flicks. Sean Connery (The real James Bond) is a Marshal assigned to a mining colony on Io, Jupiter’s moon. It’s a bleak situation where men spend most of their day in spacesuits jackhammering up precious metals. They’re doing their most to earn money since they fear automated mining machines are going to take these jobs. Quite a few of them are taking a new hopped-up amphetamine drug to keep going. But there’s a dangerous side effect as a few decide to do without their spacesuits and blow up. Connery wants to put an end to the drug dealing. But there’s a lot of people paid off to make it happen including people he thinks are his allies. Is he going to survive this place? John Ratzenberger appears in the film right before he became Cliff on Cheers.

The Mask is the film that truly established Jim Carrey as a cinema star as he goes completely wild when his character puts on an ancient mask. No longer is he a walkover. With his green appearance, Jim is ready to seduce Cameron Diaz, the singer at a mobster run nightclub. But her mobster boyfriend isn’t happy about the new guy in town. This is a comedy that so needs to be experienced in 4K UHD because Jim Carrey becomes a human cartoon on the screen. This is a live action Tex Avery animation as Jim bounces all over the place. The Mask will also have a Blu-ray edition.

Finally there’s Red Planet with an all-star crew hoping to save humanity. The Earth is dying and like a certain Billionaire demands, people are planning to relocate to Mars. All seemed to be going right with a terraforming project to bring oxygen to Mars until it isn’t. That’s when we have to launch Val Kilmer (Top Gun) and crew to see what went wrong. This turns out to be a difficult mission as everything goes wrong when the spaceship get into a Mars orbit. Among the list of problems is the ship’s robot clicks back to military mode and wants to take out all the humans. Are we ready to occupy Mars? The 4K UHD adds so much to the Red Planet‘s landscape.

On November 4, the Sci-fi thriller Outland makes its universal 4K UHD debut. Federal marshal William O’Niel (Sean ConneryThe Untouchables) receives an assignment at a titanium mining operation on Io, a moon of Jupiter. This is a hostile environment where miners in spacesuits work on the harsh rocky surface in 14-hour shifts. There’s not much to do inside the climate controlled outpost besides play racquetball, hang out at a gentleman’s club, and spend their pay in a brothel, all of which are overseen by Mark Sheppard (Peter BoyleYoung Frankenstein). The miners are under a lot of pressure to hit quotas. A few have snapped, exposed themselves to the moon’s atmosphere, and suffered horrible deaths. The company blames the incidents on mental breakdowns. O’Niel suspects there is more to the story and enlists the unwilling help of Dr. Lazarus (Frances SternhagenMisery). They discover a dangerous stimulant in the blood of a deceased worker, which keeps the miners working long hours for months on end and ultimately leads to psychotic episodes. Can O’Niel break up the drug ring responsible for the deaths?

Meek bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Jim CarreyBatman Forever) gets bullied by disreputable car mechanics, conniving co-workers, and an annoying landlady. He’s the perfect pushover. He finds solace in watching cartoons on TV. The only one who won’t take advantage of him is his dog Milo (Max). Stanley develops a crush on a new customer, Tina Carlyle (Cameron DiazCharlie’s Angels), a singer at the swinging Coco Bongo club. This potential romance has two problems: Stanley is too shy to ask her out, and she’s dating the vicious mobster Dorian Tyrell (Peter GreenePulp Fiction), who runs the nightclub. When he attempts to enter the nightclub, the bouncers refuse Stanley entry. On his way home, he jumps in the water to rescue a man floating nearby. The body turns out to be garbage and an ancient mask. When he puts on the mask, Ipkiss is transformed into a green-headed character straight out of a Tex Avery cartoon. He comically terrorizes anyone who crosses him. The Coco Bongo Club erupts when the masked Stanley hijacks the floor show with s-s-smoking dance moves to woo Tina. But Dorian Tyrell has other plans—and he’s ready to make the manic Stanley say, “That’s all, folks!”

On November 18, buckle up as Red Planet makes its 4K UHD debut. The Martian landscape has never looked more vivid, thanks to a brand-new 4K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative. The limited edition set is packed with hours of special features, collectible packaging, and newly commissioned extras.

The Earth is dying and mankind plans to relocate to Mars after a massive terraforming project. The remote sensors record the oxygen levels dropping before they stop responding. The first manned crew is launched to Mars to see if the decades-long program can be salvaged. The Mars-1 crew consists of Commander Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne MossThe Matrix), co-pilot Ted Santen (Benjamin BrattMiss Congeniality), science officer Bud Chantilas (Terence StampSuperman II), engineer Robby Gallagher (Val KilmerTop Gun), bioengineer Quinn Burchenal (Tom SizemoreNatural Born Killers) and terraformer Chip Pettengill (Simon BakerThe Devil Wears Prada). The six-month journey goes off-course as the crew approaches the Angry Red Planet. A gamma-ray burst slams into their spacecraft, disrupting all systems. Their lander makes a rough, off-target descent onto the Martian surface. The atmosphere-producing algae is gone. The base is in ruins, leaving their spacesuits as the only source of oxygen. To make matters worse, the research robot AMEE has reverted to military mode, and now considers the crew hostile targets. Things aren’t looking good for life on Mars.

Special features include a 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible); original lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio; optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing; brand new interviews with crew members; a brand new visual retrospective; deleted scenes; theatrical trailer; and an illustrated collector’s booklet.

Outland [Limited Edition]

A federal marshal at a mining colony on the Jupiter moon of Io uncovers a conspiracy. He gets no help when he finds himself marked for murder.

cover art

EVEN IN SPACE, THE ULTIMATE ENEMY IS MAN.

Writer-director Peter Hyams (Capricorn One, 2010, The Relic) takes classic Western tropes off-world and into the future in sci-fi thriller Outland, starring Sean Connery as a federal marshall assigned to keep the peace on a distant moon.

Con-Am 27 is a mining facility on Io, one of Jupiter’s largest moons. Six hundred million miles away, the gravity there is one sixth of what it is on Earth, and there is no breathable atmosphere. The work is hard, the bonuses big and productivity is breaking all records. But people are dying. Every so often they just snap. The secret? A drug that can keep its miners working days on end, but over time results in burn-out and psychosis. When new Marshall William O’Niel (Sean Connery) investigates, he uncovers a deadly conspiracy and finds his life under threat from a company that will stop at nothing to keep him quiet.

A chillingly prophetic depiction of corporate greed and exploitation with muscular direction from Hyams, and a stellar performance from Connery, Outland arrives on 4K UHD in a brand new restoration that is out of this world.
