As things warm up outside, Arrow Video brings the heat with four releases for March. First up is the 4K UHD (and Blu-ray) premiere of The Birthday. Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys) is being dragged to the birthday party for his girlfriend’s father. He’s never met the guy and things just feel extra weird at the hotel hosting the festivities. There’s a lot of freakish things happening before they bring out the cake. The film was made in Spain with an English speaking cast. It took nearly 20 years for The Birthday to arrive in America so it’s a “lost” film. Feldman cracks me up as the nervous boyfriend. Red Sonja brings another character from the world of Conan The Barbarian. After refusing to be the lover to Queen Gedren (Sandahl Bergman, Conan The Barbarian), Red Sonja (Brigitte Nielsen, Cobra) is attacked by her guards. She prayers for revenge and a spirit grants her super strength. She learns how to weird a sword so she can get revenge. Only she learns that the Queen has taken a relic from a nearby temple that can destroy the world. Her only help is Lord Kalidor (Arnold Schwarzenegger who is not playing Conan). Red Sonja see the value in a trusted partner?
Salem’s Lot was one of the greatest creepy TV miniseries ever aired. This is what happens when Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) joins forces with Stephen King. David Soul (from Starsky & Hutch) returns to his childhood home to explore a haunted mansion. Except James Mason has already bought the house with his partner. While Davis Soul wants to focus on the past, he finds himself in the middle of a fresh killing spree in the small Maine town. The boxset has both the original two night miniseries and the theatrical cut of Salem’s Lot. Eiichi Kudo‘s Samurai Revolution Trilogy is a boxset of the director’s three films about the nasty things the relatives of the Shogun would do. This was revolutionary at the time when Japanese cinema didn’t want to show the Shogun or the samurai warriors as less than noble. These are three amazing tales of people who must rise up against the powerful who abuse their positions. Here’s the press release from Arrow Video with all the details on the films.

Also on March 31, the true nature of life in feudal Japan takes center stage in Eiichi Kudo’s Samurai Revolution Trilogy, making its Blu-ray debut. Director Eiichi Kudo revolutionized the jidaigeki genre during the 1960’s with 13 Assassins, The Great Killing, and Eleven Samurai, the very films that make up this landmark trilogy. The limited edition boxset features High-Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentations of all three films, hours of special features, and newly commissioned extras.
The Shogun and Samurai warriors were originally presented in cinema as noble men who upheld the morality and ethics of the Bushido code in feudal Japan, an attitude that shifted with director Eiichi Kudo’s 13 Assassins. Lord Matsudaira has been accused of horrifying crimes, yet nothing can be done to punish him since his brother is the Shogun and he’s about to be promoted to an even higher position. A group of Samurai secretly plots justice, assembling 13 assassins to ambush Lord Matsudaira and his 200 guards.
The Great Killing centers on the Chief Elder’s conspiracy to elevate the Shogun’s easily controllable brother to power, allowing him to truly administer authority without holding the title. A rival official must recruit allies to prevent the scheme from unfolding.
In Eleven Samurai, a hunting party led by Lord Nariatsu journeys onto the Oshi clan’s fiefdom in pursuit of prey, and this border breach leads the petulant Lord to murder an Oshi official. The head of the Oshi clan demands action from the Shogun’s Council of Elders, but they instead award the Oshi fiefdom to Lord Nariatsu, as he is the Shogun’s son and can do no wrong. This injustice drives members of the Oshi clan to plot an uprising against their new leader.
All three films are loosely based on historical events involving Shogun-connected family members failing to live up to the Bushido code.
Special features include original lossless Japanese mono audio on all three films; optional newly translated English subtitles for all three films; an illustrated collectors’ booklet; brand new audio commentaries on each film; video essays on the score, cinematography and the historical setting; Samurai Guerilla is a three part archival interview with Eiichi Kudo’s former assistant director Misao Arai; theatrical trailers for 13 Assassins; a tribute to director Eiichi Kudo by his former assistant and brother-in-law Masaaki Ito; and an archival interview on the films of Eiichi Kudo.

The Birthday [Limited Edition]
Norman, a man in love with his girlfriend, attends her father’s party, held in a hotel where a sect is preparing for the birth of the god it worships.

Unreleased for nearly twenty years, The Birthday has achieved near-mythic status among cult film enthusiasts. Shot on a single, meticulously designed location, Eugenio Mira’s deliriously offbeat dark comedy offers a career-best turn from Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys), playing wildly against type.
Painfully awkward Norman Forrester (Feldman) chooses the opulent birthday party of his girlfriend Alison’s (Erica Prior) wealthy father (Jack Taylor, Conan the Barbarian) as the perfect moment to propose. But between bizarre encounters with guests and unnervingly polite hotel staff, Norman stumbles into a nightmarish occult conspiracy that threatens not just his relationship but the fate of the world itself.
Rediscovered at last, The Birthday blends screwball comedy, cosmic horror and feverish style into an unforgettable cinematic experience. Restored from the original negative, Arrow Video is proud to present this one-of-a-kind descent into madness in the release it’s always deserved.

Salem’s Lot [Limited Edition]
A novelist and a young horror fan attempt to save a small New England town which has been invaded by vampires.

From Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, comes the mini-series that scarred a generation. Based on Stephen King‘s all-time classic of small-town terror, welcome to Salem’s Lot. Population two-thousand and thirteen, but falling fast!
Author Ben Mears (David Soul, Starsky and Hutch) returns to the town of Salem’s Lot after 25 years to write about the Marsten House, an old mansion with a bad reputation that has haunted the writer since childhood. There’s an antiques store about to open, run by the mysterious Richard Straker (James Mason, Lolita) and his unseen partner Mr. Barlow (Reggie Nalder, The Dead Don’t Die), and they’re living in the Marsten House. A series of deaths and disappearances leads Ben to believe that a vampire is feeding on the town. But how can he stop them, and will anyone believe him?
With a script by Paul Monash (producer of De Palma’s Carrie, writer of Peyton Place and The Friends of Eddie Coyle) and a superb cast that includes Bonnie Bedelia (Die Hard), Fred Willard (Best in Show), Geoffrey Lewis (Every Which Way But Loose) and Elisha Cook Jr. (The Killing), Tobe Hooper breathes vivid life and chilling un-death into the characters of King’s novel. Eiichi Kudo’s Samurai Revolution Trilogy [Limited Edition]
The Samurai Revolution trilogy depicts the rot at the heart of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Throughout Japanese cinema, the image of the noble samurai righting wrongs katana in hand remains a fixture of the jidaigeki genre, with the authoritarianism and corruption of the country’s medieval past often attenuated for the sake of spectacle and entertainment. But in the 1960s, director Eiichi Kudo‘s Samurai Revolution Trilogy shattered this idealized conception of the samurai, providing an authentic and scathing portrayal of Japan’s tyrannical past to question the social and political landscape of his day.
Beginning in 1963 with 13 Assassins (remade in 2010 by Takashi Miike), followed by The Great Killing in 1964 and 11 Samurai in 1967, the Samurai Revolution trilogy depicts the rot at the heart of the Tokugawa shogunate: despotic lords oppress their people and abuse their power with impunity, loyalty to the Shogun is valued above compassion and righteousness, and samurai have shed any trace of nobility in favor of their own self-interest, which they pursue with gleeful cruelty. Each film portrays a group of honorable samurai driven to plan the political assassination of a corrupt lord, hoping to light the fuse that will eventually destroy the regime. But the rebels must understand the fatal consequences of their mission. Should the Shogun falter, then their lives and the entire samurai class will be forfeit.
Eiichi Kudo masterfully deploys expressive black and white cinematography, spectacular swordfights and compelling performances to paint a rich visual and narrative tapestry, using each film to further explore questions of ethics and morality. Featuring a who’s who of iconic jidaigeki actors including Chiezo Kataoka (Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji), Ko Nishimura (Lady Snowblood), Kei Sato (Hara-Kiri) and Toru Abe (Zatoichi and the One-Armed Swordsman), Kudo’s Samurai Revolution trilogy rank among the most important samurai films ever made and are a must-have for chanbara connoisseurs.
