Arrow Video presents Kung Fu June with Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Mortal Kombat and more nightmares

Disc Announcements, News

June is going to be all kicks, chops and nightmares thanks to Arrows Video’s packed release schedule that includes so much goodness and scares. First up is Marlowe with James Garner (The Rockford Files) as sleuth Phillip Marlowe. He’s hired to track down a missing person. He quickly learns there’s a serious reason why that person goes missing. The highlight of the Neo Noir is the arrival of Bruce Lee (Enter The Dragon) as a martial arts goon that’s trying to get Marlowe to give up the case. You get to see a fight between Jim Rockford and Bruce Lee! What a better way to start Kung Fu June!

Next up is the 4K UHD of Takashi Miike’s Audition. What starts out as a goofy romantic comedy turns into a horrific nightmare. A guy comes up with a fun way to meet women by auditioning them as the girlfriend on a new project. But he’s really looking for a new love. He thinks he’s found the perfect women. But he’s so wrong. I was originally told about this film by Elliot Tong who co-wrote Jackie Chan’s Police Story 4: First Strike (you’ll read more about that in a second). I rented the VHS and thought it was interesting, but nothing too wild. Then the moment the good loving goes bad hit. Then I was glued to the extremes Takashi Miike brought to the screen. A brilliant J-Horror film that deserves to be seen on 4K UHD.

Speaking of Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan’s Breakout Hits is the boxset I’ve been waiting to grasp since for nearly three decades. Not only are you getting the six films that Jackie established him as a worldwide box office in 4K UHD, but American fans also finally get to see the untainted Golden Harvest cuts that ran in Hong Kong. When I saw Drunken Master II as part of a Hong Kong film festival in 1994, they imported the print. When it arrived on home video, the American distributor had reedited the film. As much as I loved the film the first time, I couldn’t rewatch it. Until now. Even Jackie’s big American hit Rumble In the Bronx had been altered by the US distributor. Now you can hear the original score. Police Story 4: First Strike (the film Elliot Tong co-wrote) had 20 minutes slashed away when it played my local Cineplex. The film makes better sense now. Also in the boxset is Thunderbolt, Mr. Nice Guy, and Who Am I? After these films, Jackie went Hollywood with the Rush Hour films, Burn Hollywood Burn and more. Jackie Chan’s Breakout Hits delivers the action actor who doesn’t need a stuntman or CGI as he thrills us. There are international cuts along with other cuts on the 4K UHD discs.

Mortal Kombat Kollection give us the 4K UHD versions of the original Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. This is video arcade sensation coming to the big screen. Now you can see what happens when the words “Finish them!” are spoken. Turns out there’s a tournament that determines the fate of the universe with fighters from both sides battling it out on an island. Can Earth’s fiercest warriors win? Or are we doomed? The second movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation follows up the story with different actors in certain roles. I’m not sure why The Highlander gets swapped for one of The Warriors. But it’s a videogame so maybe someone had next. There’s a lot of action on the screen when the supernatural fighters pull out their tricks. This boxset is even more kicking content for your Kung Fu June evenings.

Wake In Fight is one of the first Ozploitation flicks and a brilliant tale of what can go wrong on a teacher’s Christmas vacation. John Grant (Gary BondZulu) is a wannabe posh guy who only gets through college from a government program that has you teach for a few years after graduation. He gets assigned to a single room schoolhouse in the middle of the Outback. It’s almost like a prison sentence. When Christmas break arrives he’s out the door faster than his students. He has to catch a train to the remote mining town of Bundanyabba before catching a flight to Sydney on the next day. However his night in “The Yabba” leads him to local gambling den and hanging out with Clarence “Doc” Tydon (Donald PleasenceHalloween). He thinks he understands the local gambling game except he loses all of his money including his plane ticket. He’s stuck in the town and depending on strangers until he can get back to his nowhere schoolhouse. This turns into a freakish nightmare of drunks, outrageous behavior and kangaroo hunting. The film was directed by Ted Kotcheff (First BloodWeekend at Bernie’s) which should be treated as a classic of outsider horror. One of the bonus features includes a visit to a Mad Max 2 museum (aka The Road Warrior). Both films were made in that harsh area. Wake In Fright is a perfect summer movie.

New audiences didn’t always get the full picture of Jackie Chan’s signature style, performing his own death-defying stunts without a double. For their original North American releases, these breakthrough films were edited, redubbed, and rescored. This collection includes both the Hong Kong and International versions, allowing viewers to experience these films as originally intended.

Drunken Master II sees Jackie Chan return to the role of legendary folk hero Wong Fei-hung, blending martial arts with slapstick comedy in one of his most celebrated performances. Hong Kong police officer Keung (Jackie Chan) travels to New York City where Uncle Bill (Bill TungPolice Story) is selling his Bronx grocery store to Elaine (Anita MuiExecutioners). When gang activity threatens the neighborhood, Keung steps in to defend the business against escalating violence. Thunderbolt puts Jackie Chan behind the wheel in a high-octane showcase of automotive stunt work. Chan Foh To (Jackie Chan) is a mechanic with aspirations of being a race car driver, who becomes entangled in a dangerous rivalry with a notorious criminal, leading to a destructive showdown on the racetrack.

Police Story 4: First Strike involves international espionage. Hong Kong police officer Jackie (Jackie Chan) is caught in a globe-trotting espionage mission tied to a stolen nuclear warhead. The action escalates with high-risk stunts including ski chases, helicopter leaps, and underwater encounters. Mr. Nice Guy sees Jackie Chan as a TV chef in Australia who becomes an unwitting target after receiving incriminating footage tied to organized crime. Mobster Giancarlo Luchetti (Richard NortonCity Hunter) pursues Jackie across Melbourne, leading to relentless, large-scale action set pieces. Director Sammo Hung (Wheels on Meals) also appears. Who Am I? follows an elite special forces operative (Jackie Chan) suffering from amnesia after a mission goes wrong. For those of you wondering if Kung Fu June is a real thing – USA Network celebrated it back in 1992. You’ll be able to enjoy the month if you pick up the Jackie Chan boxset. Here’s a promo from that time:

Marlowe [Limited Edition]

A young woman from Kansas hires LA private detective Philip Marlowe to find her missing brother.

cover art

PHILIP MARLOWE IS A PRIVATE EYE. FOR FIFTY BUCKS YOU CAN BUY HIS BRAIN, HIS FISTS AND HIS .44 MAGNUM SPECIAL. IF YOU WANT BLOOD, HE’LL GIVE YOU THAT, TOO! Following in the footsteps of Dick Powell (Murder, My Sweet) and Humphrey Bogart (The Big Sleep), James Garner (The Great Escape) brought iconic private investigator Philip Marlowe into the Age of Aquarius in this 1969 neo-noir based on Raymond Chandler‘s classic novel The Little Sister.

When Orfamay Quest hires Philip Marlowe to find her brother, it seems like just another missing persons case. But soon enough Marlowe’s investigation leads him on a trail of blackmail and murder, all of it seemingly linked to a mobster and his TV star mistress. Luscious starlets, pugnacious gangsters, suspicious cops and corpses with ice picks jammed in their necks… welcome to Marlowe country!

Garner’s easy-going style is a perfect match for Chandler’s “shop-soiled Galahad”, paving the way for his performance in classic TV show The Rockford Files. Meanwhile, the many suspects are brought vividly to life by the likes of Carroll O’Connor (All in the Family), Rita Moreno (West Side Story), Jackie Coogan (The Addams Family), Gayle Hunnicut (The Legend of Hell House) and none other than Bruce Lee (Enter the Dragon) making his American feature debut.

cover art

One of the most notorious J-Horror films ever made, Takashi Miike’s Audition exploded onto the festival circuit at the turn of the 21st century to a chorus of awards and praise. The film catapulted Miike to the international scene and paved the way for such other genre delights as Ichii the Killer and 13 Assassins.

When recent widower Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi, American Yakuza) is advised by his son to find a new wife, he seeks the advice of a colleague having been out of the dating scene for many years. The two men decide to take advantage of their position working at a film company to stage an audition to find the perfect partner. Interviewing a series of women, Shigeharu soon becomes enchanted by Asami (Eihi Shiina), a quiet, 24-year-old woman, who is immediately responsive to his charms. However, events quickly take a very dark and twisted turn as we find that Asami isn’t what she seems to be…

Pulling the audience into a story that will lead to one of the most harrowing climaxes in cinema history, Miike twists and turns us through delirious editing and shocking visuals for one of the most depraved nightmares of all time, now presented in stunning 4K UHD.

NO FEAR. NO STUNTMAN. NO EQUAL.

He was the biggest movie star in the East for two decades, but Hong Kong action legend Jackie Chan had never successfully cracked the West… until the 1990s kicked off a six-film run of phenomenal smash hits that would finally make him an international household name, instantly synonymous with the most jaw-dropping and death-defying stunts ever put on screen!

1994’s Drunken Master II sees Jackie back as Wong Fei-hung, the role that first made his name, and teaming up with Shaw Brothers legends Lau Kar-leung and Ti Lung to deliver the ultimate, era-defining love letter to classic kung fu. The following year saw Jackie’s first number one box office success in America thanks to Rumble in the Bronx, in which he visits New York City and must defend his friends and family against vicious street gangs and ruthless smugglers, followed by Thunderbolt in which Jackie is forced to compete behind the wheel against a criminal street racer who has kidnapped his sister. In the fourth entry of the much-beloved Police Story series (also known as First Strike), Jackie chases a stolen nuclear warhead on an explosive globe-trotting secret mission; Chan’s “big brother” Sammo Hung takes the director’s chair in Mr. Nice Guy as Jackie plays a TV chef in Australia forced to do bloody battle against the mob; and finally in Who Am I?, our hero is an ass-kicking amnesiac on the trail of a mysterious new power source as well as his own lost identity.

Finally together and restored in 4K for the first time, this collection of unparalleled martial arts madness chronicles Jackie Chan‘s crossover to worldwide superstardom (just before Rush Hour made him a bonafide Hollywood icon), in which no bone in his body is left unbroken in his quest to leave you entertained!

Kicking off in 1995, Mortal Kombat, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, delivers a fast paced, crowd-pleasing adaptation that pits Earth’s greatest fighters against the forces of Outworld in a no-holds-barred tournament for the fate of humanity. Featuring unforgettable characters like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage and the thunderous Raiden, the film blends martial arts choreography, fantasy world-building and a now legendary electronic soundtrack to create one of the most influential video game movies of its era. The saga continues with 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, expanding the scale and mythology as the battle spills beyond the tournament into an-all out war between realms. With higher stakes, new fighters, monstrous adversaries and epic confrontations, the sequel embraces the franchise’s operatic excess and supernatural chaos, pushing the Mortal Kombat universe into full fantasy spectacle.

Restored and packed with extras, this two-film collection celebrates the brutal fun, stylised combat and mythic world of Mortal Kombat, a landmark franchise whose unparalleled high-octane action embodies the adrenaline-fuelled spirit of the 90s in all its spectacular glory!

Wake In Fright [Limited Edition]

After a bad gambling bet, a teacher is marooned in a town full of drunk, violent men who threaten to make him just as crazy, drunk, and violent.

HAVE A DRINK, MATE? HAVE A FIGHT, MATE? HAVE A TASTE OF DUST AND SWEAT, MATE? THERE’S NOTHING ELSE OUT HERE.

Raw and brutal in its depiction of Outback country drinking culture in the 1970s, Wake in Fright is an uncompromising landmark of Australian cinema from director Ted Kotcheff (First Blood).

John Grant (Gary BondZulu), a bored schoolteacher working in the remote outback, stops overnight in the frontier mining town of Bundanyabba on his way back to Sydney for the Christmas holidays. After he loses all his savings in a bad gambling bet, Grant finds himself marooned and swept up in the vortex of a succession of hard-drinking, hard-living and crude men led by Doc (Donald PleasenceHalloween) who threaten to make him just as crazy, drunk, and violent as they are.

Ignored upon release, Wake in Fright has now been acclaimed as one of Australia’s most legendary, unique and horrifying contributions to cinema history by the likes of Martin Scorsese and Nick Cave, and is presented here in a definitive 4K restoration.
