Writer/director Robert Towne and cinematographer Conrad Hall make Tequila Sunrise a charming and stylish ’80s crime thriller. Wicked Priest Collection gathers together all five installments of this Toei series about a not-so-Holy man. Tomisaburô Wakayama (the Lone Wolf and Cub series) is a Buddhist priest who enjoys breaking his vows when it comes to booze, women and gambling. Odds are you’ll find him enjoying himself at the local brothel than conducting ceremonies. But he’s not without a moral code. In the first film, he isn’t thrilled to discover other monks are making a deal with the local Yakuza. The films have him offering more than prayers to people who need his help. He’s not a non-violence kind of monk. Tomisaburô Wakayama is wild as he enjoys life and beats up those that dare sin against him. It’s great to finally see this series after spotting it on the actor’s filmography listing.

Go is a wild time involving the troubles a group of kids working at a grocery store can get into on the weekend before Christmas. Cashier Sarah Polley (The Sweet Hereafter) who thinks she can solve her money issues when she’s approached by customers that need to buy some ecstasy. But the deal ain’t easy. Things get crazy at an all-night rave. There’s also a trip to Las Vegas that burns part of Sin City. It’s a night of insanity followed by a morning of wondering what exactly happened. Go is one of those ’90s movies remind you why you cut back on your partying over the decades. The final film is the science fiction masterpiece Forbidden Planet. What is the evil that lurks on the surface of a distant landscape? The film also lets you see Leslie Nielsen in a serious role of a space captain finding out what happened to an exploration party. The movie introduced the world to Robby The Robot who would later cameo on Lost In Space. It’s phenomenal to see Forbidden Planet on 4K UHD.

The first sequel sees Shinkai run afoul of the local mob who then hire his nemesis, the Zatoichi-inspired fighting monk Ryotatsu (Bunta Sugawara, Battles Without Honor and Humanity), hellbent on revenge against Shinkai for blinding him. In the third film, Shinkai joins the fight to defend a coastal village against dynamite-wielding pirate revolutionaries, whilst still finding the time for bawdy misadventures and fighting off the tenacious Ryotatsu. Shinkai returns to his snowy hometown for his mother’s memorial in the fourth film, and must encourage the local community to fight back against the yakuza who are exploiting them. Finally, Shinkai must face off against the vengeful Ryotatsu once last time in the series’ concluding instalment.

Wakayama shines as the rascally Shinkai whose roguish ways attract the ire of his superiors before they’re won over by his righteousness and affinity for roundhouse-kicking ruffians. A thrilling blend of raunchy humour and explosive karate fights, the Wicked Priest series is the Nirvana of Japanese 60s action comedy!
