October excitement from Arrow Video includes Boy Scouts, Androids, Ghosts & Straight to VHS Action

Disc Announcements, News

Arrow Video is ready to make your October special. They’re ready to give you a dose of football with The Last Boy Scout coming out on 4K UHD. This action film from Tony Scott, Shane Black and Joel Silver has aged well as we’ve discovered how nasty pro football team owners are. The film predicted how badly the NFL wanted to be a part of legalized sports gambling. Watch any game over the weekend and you won’t be able to keep track of the number of betting app commercials. The film is about how Bruce Willis screwed up his career as a secret service agent so he’s stuck being a private investigator in Los Angeles. Things aren’t going well since his business partner screwing him over at home. But he gets what seems like a simple gig of guarding Halle Berry at a stripclub. Her ex-pro quarterback boyfriend Damon Wayans wants Bruce to quit guarding her body. However, he can’t keep her safe when goons attack. Cars and other things are blowing up all over Los Angeles. What’s really surprising is how sinister Taylor Negron can be when he’s heavily armed. This is the guy who was hilarious as the pizza guy in Fast Times At Ridgemont High and the mail man in Better Off Dead. Now he’s delivering death to Bruce and Damon. The Last Boy Scout is a great piece of explosive ’90s action.

Futureworld is also getting released on 4K UHD so you can see the future more clearly. This is the sequel to Westworld (which Arrow Video released on 4K UHD back in February). They’ve reopened the immersive android themepark a few years after the robots went nuts and killed dozens of rich vacationing guests. Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner visit the park to see that the corporation has fixed the robots so they aren’t homicidal. Can they promote the park so the rich and famous flock back for the experience? There is no more cowboy action although there’s a tricky way for Yul Brenner to return as the Gunslinger. And there’s a more devious reason why the park is reopening. This is a worthy sequel.

The Frighteners was Peter Jackson’s way to get deep into special effects so he could make The Lord of The Rings. Michael J. Fox is going around his haunted small town being the exorcist. While he seems like a con man, he’s not a complete con man. He really can see and communicate with spirits from the nearby graveyard. He has a few ghosts as part of his grift. He is a bit of a broken man after his wife’s death which gave him this power. What starts freaking him out is seeing numbers on the foreheads of the living. Turns out there’s a greater evil than his scheme roaming the town. The Frighteners is a great horror comedy that’s perfect for your Spooky Season viewing.

Enter the Video Store: Video Vengeance takes me back to the glory days of VHS when I’d walk into Phar-Mor’s video section and find boxes of unknown films featuring stars I knew in low-budget action poses. Arrow brings together five of these films on Blu-ray so they look better than what would have rented back in the day. The best of the batch is The Final Alliance. How can you top David Hasselhoff hanging out with his pet puma? How about the Hoff and the puma battling John Saxon as an albino motorcycle gang leader. This is the perfect film for fans of Baywatch. But there’s even more excitement in the boxset. Ministry of Vengeance gives us John Schneider from The Dukes of Hazzard as a priest who must attack terrorists in the Middle East. Why? As revenge for killing his family. Joshua Tree makes Dolph Lundgren gets accused of killing a cop. He’s chased by the great George Segal who might know more about the case. Hangfire has a prisoners escape and take hostages in a town where Brad Davis is the sheriff. He has to deal with these escaped killers and a psychotic National Guard colonel play by Jan-Michael Vincent, Is this town going to get burned down? Finally there is R.O.T.O.R. that has a robot cop goes nuts on the streets of Dallas. This film was being made at the same time as RobotCop. This boxset is perfect if you’re a regular listener to the Golan Globus Theater podcast.

The Last Boy Scout [Limited Edition]

A private detective’s female witness is murdered, he investigates the crime that leads to a corrupt politician and a crooked football team owner.

cover art

THE GOAL IS TO SURVIVE.

From the star of Die Hard, the director of Top Gun, the writer of Lethal Weapon and the producer of 48 Hrs., comes The Last Boy Scout, an era-defining explosion of cynical wit and extreme violence! Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis) is a burned out P.I. who hates the world and seemingly everything in it. Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans, In Living Color) is a former all-star quarterback, busted out of the game on gambling charges. When Jimmy’s girlfriend, Cory (Halle Berry,X-Men ), is brutally murdered despite hiring Joe to protect her, both men become embroiled in a mystery that will lead them deep into a shady world of politics, blackmail and sports gambling on their quest to discover who killed Cory and why, and maybe find a little redemption for themselves along the way.

With gags and violence as brutal as each other, this is screenwriter Shane Black at his darkest, pushing the buddy action formula as far as it can go while director Tony Scott ups the 90s action-thriller ante to deliver a nihilistic neo-noir masterpiece drenched in smoke and neon. Once seen, never forgotten, The Last Boy Scout is back and it’s looking so good you’ll dance a jig!

Futureworld [Limited Edition]

Upon attempting to expose Futureworld, an ex-employee is dispatched after he tips off the reporter who exposed Westworld.

cover art

WHERE WESTWORLD STOPPED, FUTUREWORLD BEGINS!

Following the success of Westworld, director Richard T. Heffron expanded Michael Crichton‘s techno-nightmare with Futureworld – a sleek, conspiracy-laced slice of 1970s science fiction that trades frontier thrills for post-Watergate paranoia in the age of automation.

When reporters Chuck Browning (Peter Fonda, Easy Rider) and Tracy Ballard (Blythe Danner, The Great Santini) are invited to inspect the newly reopened Delos resort, they find a futuristic paradise promising safe, sanitized entertainment. But beneath the polished surface, troubling inconsistencies begin to emerge – and as suspicion turns to terror, the pair uncover a sinister conspiracy with consequences far beyond the park itself. Stylish, suspenseful and packed with all-star turns – including the return of Yul Brynner‘s implacable Gunslinger – Futureworld spins a compelling web of sci-fi intrigue, serving as a timely reminder that progress always has its price.

After a car accident that kills his wife, a man discovers he can communicate with the dead.

DEAD YET?

Before The Lord of the Rings made him a household name, Peter Jackson delivered The Frighteners – a wildly inventive blend of supernatural horror and dark comedy. Produced by Robert Zemeckis, it cemented Jackson’s reputation as one of the most imaginative filmmakers of his generation. Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future) stars as Frank Bannister, a small-town psychic who uses his ghostly friends to con unsuspecting locals – until a series of mysterious deaths points to a far darker force. Racing to uncover the truth, Frank realizes he’s the only person capable of stopping a malevolent spirit from claiming more victims… even if it means facing his own haunted past.

As macabre as it is mischievous, The Frighteners blends chilling suspense with offbeat humor and groundbreaking visual effects. Stylish, spooky, and full of heart, this cult classic continues to thrill from beyond the grave.

Enter The Video Store: Video Vengeance [Limited Edition Blu-ray Collection]

A town has been taken hostage. Who will win the battle? Only the mighty will survive.

cover art

Welcome back to the Arrow Video Store!

In the late ’80s and early ’90s boom of Direct to Video action films, vengeance was a key theme amongst the bullet-ridden gun fights, vehicular explosions, helicopters and the muscly-man on a mission. In this second edition of Arrow Video’s Enter the Video Store boxset, we collate some of the more underrated and lesser-seen gems from the period, featuring a wonderfully nostalgic cast list, including Dolph Lundgren, Yaphet Kotto, John Saxon, John Schneider, Ken Foree, David Hasselhoff and scores more.

In Ministry of Vengeance, Vietnam vet and devoted minister Rev. David Miller (John Schneider) puts down his Bible in exchange for an assault rifle to take revenge on the Lebanese terrorists who murdered his family. Meanwhile, in The Final Alliance, ex-Marine, Will Colton (David Hasselhoff) returns to his small hometown with his pet puma to take on a corrupt sheriff and a gang of bikers led by an albino named Ghost (John Saxon). The hugely enjoyable cult classic R.O.T.O.R. presents a rogue robotic cop who takes to the streets of Dallas acting as judge, jury and executioner – and only its creator, robotics expert Barrett Coldyron (Richard Gesswein), can stop him! In Peter Maris‘ film Hangfire, Vietnam veteran and local Sheriff Ike Slayton (Brad Davis) teams up with his old army friend, Billy (Ken Foree), to rescue his wife (Kim Delaney) held hostage by a large group of escaped convicts. Finally, stunt legend Vic Armstrong‘s directorial debut Joshua Tree sees Dolph Lundgren on the run and seeking revenge against the corrupt cop (George Segal) who framed him and put him behind bars.

Newly remastered from the best materials available, along with brand new and archival extra features, it’s time to order in your favorite takeout, put your legs up on the sofa and settle in for night of classic ’80s and ’90s Video Vengeance.
