The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees tonight in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, clinching the AL Pennant, and a World Series birth, Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
This is the first time in Major League Baseball history that – in a 7-game series – a team went down three games to none, and then won the next four to win the series. The feat has only happened twice in U.S. professional sports, both in the NHL, and the last time two decades ago.
The final score was Red Sox 10, Yankees 3. Winning pitcher was Derek Lowe, with Kevin Brown getting the loss. Johnny Damon, slumping all series, hit two home runs and knocked in six runs – an ALCS record – for the Red Sox, and David Ortiz was named ALCS MVP after the game.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals beat the Astros 6-4 to tie up the National League Series, setting up a Game 7 for Thursday night. Jim Edmonds won the game in the bottom of the 12th with a walk-off two-run home run. Former Red Sox pitchers Roger Clemens and Jeff Suppan will go head to head in the final game of the NLCS to determine who will face Boston in the World Series, beginning on Saturday at Fenway Park. The home team has won each game of the NLCS this year, so far.
