Daron old chum we’ve got an interesting issue ahead. I blame the damn Phoenix Saga. LOL. Actually I had a death in the family on top of only getting a few emails, so this could be a rather quick issue.

Well they can’t all be Eisener editions now can they? I’m sorry to hear about your loss though. I hope you and your family are doing well.

With that in mind, I’ll try and go easy on you this week.

First the Colossus/Wolvie moon emails

Michael emails

In reference to Wolverine lofting Colossus and fastball specialing him at the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga, you guys seem to have forgotten that they were fighting on the Moon. I’m pretty sure that Logan even made mention of that when he hefted Piotr and chucked him at the Imperial Guard “good thing we’re here on the moon and gravity is less powerful…”. I’m sure that Wolvie is tough and strong and all, but no way he’s competing on World’s Strongest Man just off of that one feat of ‘strength’.

Sean emails

Love the column. In the last handbook there was a question about Wolverine throwing Colossus during the Dark Phoenix Saga. I believe that that particular variation of the Fastball Special occurred while the X-Men were fighting on the Blue Area of the moon, and the moon’s lighter gravity made it possible for Wolverine to throw the much heavier Colossus. Hope this helps.

Moren emails

I had a comment about the Wolverine throwing Colossus during the Dark Pheonix saga. At the time they were on the Moon battling the Imperial Guard. Being on the Moon Colossus’ weight was 1/6 that of his normal weight. So that would mean that Wolverine threw about 33 lbs which is much more reasonable.

Vincent emails

1) The Fastball Special. During the Dark Phoenix Saga, Wolverine >picked up an un-armored Colossus and threw him at Dark Phoenix. >Colossus turned into his armored form in mid-air and delivered >a metallic smackdown to the villainess. Now, what this shows me >is how insanely buff Wolverine is. I mean, Peter Rasputin is a >veritable mountain of a man, yet Wolverine is able to pick him >up and toss him through the air! What do you suppose ol’ Logan >can bench-press, anyway?

>Colossus weighs around 200 without the armor. I would suspect >Logan may be able to press about 250 or so if under right >conditions.

>Personally, I would write that one up to comic book physics. >Wolverine would need to be able to bench press a HELL of a lot >more than 250 to be able to pick up and throw ANY grown man >like a baseball, let alone Colossus. In the Martial Arts studio >where I teach, I’ve worked with a bunch of other instructors who >could bench press over 300 pounds, and not one of them could >throw me like that, and I weight 200 lbs. That’s just one of >those things you have to take with a grain of salt. – Daron

Hey guys, it’s your old pal Vince, just wanted to pass some stuff onto you if you don’t mind.

Just a quick note about Wolverine Fastballing Peter, (God that sounds pornographic) this happened on the moon and they even make a mention that this is the only condition that Wolverine could do it this way with the looser gravity, and on top of that both he and Colossus were on a platform or on a building, so he was actually tossing him downward. That explains that I think.

And about Wolverine’s extra senses, I think that goes with his healing abilities, he’s in such great phisical shape that he’s eyes are better then 20/20, his hearing, and of course his noses.

Funny I’m more of a DC fan yet I’m writing you guys and not the Who’s who dudes. I think because you’re more impartial to everything. The DC guys don’t actually come off as DC fans. (Superman loses to Thor because of magic…huh?) Oh well that’s just my complaint. Thanks for the good job as usual. Sorry about the loss of the strip, if I could draw more then stick figures I’d volunteer to you dudes.

Thanks everyone for the emails. Sorry for the last minute edit last week but damn you guys really all chimed in fast and furious with this one. I do appreciate it though. I didn’t even think about the Moon factor.

Oh and Vince I’m one of the biggest Marvel fans around. I only read Marvel in fact. It’s why I’m also called Mister Marvel other then being the Walking Talking Marvel Encyclopedia. I try my best to help everyone out.

Wouldn’t have been nice if we’d known this particular “event” took place on the moon? I think we could have explained as well as you all have had we known that before hand. The Phoenix Saga was a bit before my time. I know the basics of the story, but I’ve never actually read it.

And thanks for the kind works, Vince, on the strip. It does suck, but you know what they say about all good things… – Daron

Ryan emails

just wanted to chime in here about the wolvie picking up colossus thing..i thought it was explained that because they were on the moon and the gravity was less there was why wolvie was able to do it. i haven’t read the story for awhile now, but i could swear there was even a dialogue between the 2 saying something exactly along those lines. then again i could be having false implanted memories.

Nah, Ryan you’re just agreeing with everyone else above.

hiya jim(even though your email says jamie) and of course the all mighty DOL. i have a question about redstone from squadron supreme/supreme power. now i only have the trade for the squadron supreme series where we get almost no background on redstone. in supreme power he is portrayed as a psychotic serial killer. my question is was there ever any other background on redstone in any of the original squadron series? because all that i got from the trade was that he was hanging out by a tree and was really big and strong. thanks for your time!

Redstone in the old Squadron Supreme mini series joined the book in issue 9. I don’t remember an origin though. His powers where amazing resistance to physical and energy attacks. Also here’s the history I can tell you Michael Redstone. He was the first new recruit Nighthawk found for his Redeemers. Redstone proved to be equal to Hyperion in strength, and became de facto leader of the Redeemers after Nighthawk’s death. When the Squadron traveled into space to confront the Nth Man, Redstone suffered a violent reaction from being seperated from the Earth. Although Dr. Spectrum tried to return the dying Redstone to Earth in time, he was too late.

Yo, yo, yo, Ryan, WHAT UP! – Daron

Okay, I know that someone called “Kid Omega” appears in the second issue of Phoenix: Endsong, but haven’t read the issue, so maybe my question is answered inside. Anyways…

Who is “Kid Omega” and what’s his deal?

Real Name: Quentin Quire
Team Affiliations: Omega Gang
First Appearance: New X-Men #134 (Cameo: New X-Men #126)
Death Occurrence: New X-Men #138
Powers and Abilities: Telepathy, Manipulating Others, Mental Blocks, Disable Other Forms Of Telepathy

Kid Omega tried to take over Xavier’s School, but was mortally wounded.

Currently: Kid Omega was killed by the Magneto imposter.

Quentin is an Omega class mutant who had a thing for Sophia one of the Cuckoos when he was at the school. He started a group called the Omega Gang and tried to take over the school. Magneto/Xorn mortally wounded him and turned him into energy. He’s recently been seen in X-Men Phoenix Endsong where he’s made a come back.

Here is my question, which A) I hope hasn’t been asked before and B) I hope isn’t too complicated. Here goes….

Does Marvel go on the ‘heroes started showing up 10 years ago give or take’ philosophy of the ‘other company’? I’ve noticed with a few series that are supposed to have taken place in the past they have cell phones and websites and such.

Along that line, are certain costumes/events ‘retconned’ out of Marvel continuity to keep it all fluid? Say, Rogues’s ugly original costume?

Thanks in advance for answering. Great column guys.

Welcome and some costumes do get retconned when it comes to the past. Best example of this is if you read Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The story is the formation of the original Avengers as if it happened not to long ago. Some of Iron Man’s armors are not exactly what he wore at the time. He didn’t change armors that quickly back in the day like he has in this series. Rogue’s old costume didn’t get retconned though. She actually wore it again while with the X-Men in the late 90s for a short time.

To answer your first question, no. Marvel doesn’t have the 10 year policy that DC instituted a few years back. Trying to figure out the Marvel timline will probably give you a seizure so I’d recommend not trying. Here’s a great example. In the entire time she’s been around Kitty Pride has only really aged about 3 years. On the flip side Peter Parker has aged more than 10. Try and fit a “standard” time lapse around numbers like that… Or rather don’t, we like having you all as readers. – Daron

First off let me say I’m glad to see the gang again! I was a regular reader/occasional writer back at the old site, and I’m ashamed to say it took me a little while to run across the new page at ComicsNexus.

Now that I know you’re around again, it’s question time. This one’s short and sweet: what is writer Ron Zimmerman up to? His Spider-Man stories have featured some of the funniest dialogue in years, and the man seemed to have a better grasp of the characters than most writers. Get Kraven was just awesome. What’s Ron worked on lately, and will we be seeing him anytime soon? Thanks.

Let’s give you a list of all of Ron Zimmerman’s work with Marvel. This way you know what you may or may not have missed. (again thanks to our friends at UHBMCC

That’s it for today but I’ve got a little project for the readers. We’re going to do a little top ten with votes here in the Handbook. I want to do a top ten of Marvel story arcs. We’re talking the big ones like AOA, Onslaught, Coming of Galactus, etc.

The rules simple. To vote please email a question, opinion or anything with your vote for your favorite story and in two weeks I’ll count down the top ten Marvel story arcs according to you the fans. It can be anything Daredevil, Cap, X-Men or all Marvel. Your vote counts.

Now Daron you may sign off.

Oh may I, why thank you oh generous one. With that said, I don’t have much to say. I do want to let you all know that I have a wonderful interview with the entire Small Gods staff coming out Friday. If you ever wanted to know the process for submitting, and creating a comic from script to solicitations, this interview will be for you. Also if you’re a fan of the book (and you all should be by now :) you’ll like it just because it’s the Small Gods team and I having some fun. I hope everyone is doing well, and I’ll see you on Friday with the interview and then back here next Wednesday!

Now my turn.

First I suggest everyone go out and check Young Avengers this week. It looks rather interesting.

Second Marvel.com vote of the week: On the last page of Young Avengers #1, Iron Lad is revealed to be…

Third incase you missed it FF the movie has been pushed back to July 8th.

Forth sorry for the weird week but I have a lot on my mind. I will make up for it next week.

Now signing off. Reporting from the Marvel Universe I’m Jim Trabold. Have a good week and see you in the comic shop.
