10 Thoughts On SmackDown – 05.08.09

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

It’s 10 thoughts time once again.

1. SmackDown is well and truly becoming the Chris Jericho show. Last week, he was in the majority of backstage segments, and this week he’s interfering in the opening segment. The only thing I can say is that it’s great to see Jericho actually being given the chance to show why he’s considered one of the best speakers in the WWE.

2. I found Jeff Hardy’s comment on himself being the “charismatic number one contender” pretty funny. I don’t know if it’s only me, but I find Jeff as one of the most boring people on the microphone in the main event. Jeff can shine in the ring, but he could very well be the worst speaker in the main event scene.

3. Mike Knox is being treated as a serious monster heel now that he’s on SmackDown, and while I would generally be happy about this, it does make things a little cluttered on the roster. Knox, Kane and Umaga all seem to be taking the monster heel route, so unless Knox develops a personality, he hasn’t got a hope of getting anywhere.

4. I have no idea why Alicia Fox is suddenly teaming with Michelle McCool. I can see what Alicia gains from it, getting the rub from a more popular diva, but I’m unsure on whether investing in Alicia, who isn’t superb in the ring, is in the WWE’s best interest.

5. John Morrison is now working as a face, at least that’s what it appears. And while I enjoyed Morrison’s heel persona, I think Morrison could work even better as a cocky face character similar to Mr. Kennedy.

6. What is the WWE thinking? While they should be building the Edge/ Jeff Hardy match for Judgment Day, they’re busy jobbing him out to CM Punk for the second week in a row. While it does build up a potential CM Punk cash in of the Money in the Bank, I can’t help but think that Edge is just going to look weak going into Judgment Day.

7. I made my thoughts on the Cryme Time, Eve, Layla storyline pretty clear last week, but I’ve got to repeat it – I do not want to see a feud that leads to Eve vs. Layla!

8. Was it obvious to anybody else that Khali was going to answer Zigger’s challenge? Ziggler’s attack on Khali cemented Ziggler as a serious wrestler on SmackDown, and as I’ve said every week, he could definitely be a big star in the future if booked correctly.

9. So it looks like we’ll be seeing Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio at Judgment Day. The match could be the sleeper match of the night.

10. The main event for this week was simply superb. On their own Jeff Hardy and Chris Jericho put on superb matches, but in the ring together these two put on one of the best matches I’ve seen in the WWE in weeks. It was full of great in ring action, as well as building towards Edge vs. Jeff Hardy, and a potential Edge vs. Chris Jericho feud following Judgment Day.
