Columbia Pictures has revealed the trailer for director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s (The Lives of Others) thriller The Tourist, starring Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany, Rufus Sewell, Timothy Dalton and Steven Berkoff.

Opening in theaters on December 10, 2010, the film revolves around Frank (Depp), an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise (Jolie) is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Venice, Frank pursues a potential romance but soon finds himself the pursued as he and Elise are caught in a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

Those thinking this is Oscar bait on the part of Columbia Pictures, keep those notions in check. It was in December a year ago that Alec Baldwin was getting attention for his performance in the comedy It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep and Steve Martin. That didn’t morph into anything Oscar, unless you count his co-hosting duties with Martin. This adaptation of the 2005 French film looks to add beats of humor to make it breezy in a North by Northwest sort of way. Three writers (Jullian Fellows, Christopher McQuarrie and von Donnersmarck) credited with the screenplay have me worried, but with Colleen Atwood designing the costumes at least everyone will look good.
