The Chaos King is prepared for Hercules to bring his mortal allies against him at the end of Chaos War #1 and so he uses the power of Nightmare (whom he killed) to “destroy” (more likely disable) the minds of Marvel’s heroes except for Thor, Hercules and, likely, Amadeus Cho. This will lead to the formation of the god squad in issue #2.
