NBC Orders David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman Pilot

News, Top Story

Long rumored, and a few weeks ago all but confirmed to not be happening, NBC ordered a pilot of a Wonder Woman by writer David E. Kelley. Kelley is known for being the creator of shows like Ally McBeal, The Practice, and Picket Fences, and had been shopping around a pilot for a Wonder Woman show. NBC had apparently passed on it a few weeks ago, as they were awaiting the arrival of their new president of programming Bob Greenblatt, and didn’t want to commit to a show like Wonder Woman that would have obviously higher licensing fees than other pilots. What with our favorite Amazon being the property of DC Comics, and by proxy, Warner Bros.

But then Greenblatt took a look at the strong debut of a new show called Harry’s Law, also created by Kelley, and seemingly had no issue picking up the pilot. Kelley said recently that he was optimistic that the show would be on in the next year, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that it could be put on schedule in the winter season of 2012, or most likely, fall 2012.

The catch, and there always is one, is that according to Deadline the pitch is…..different than what Wonder Woman fans are used to. This Diana will be a vigilante in L.A. who is also a successful corporate executive and modern woman who is trying to balance everything in her extraordinary life. While this may be cause for concern for some comic fans, it’s also an attempt at grounding the character firmer in reality in a manner in hopes of making a character that viewers can closer relate to.

Not to knock on Princess Diana of Themyscira, the Amazon with magical items from an island of women, who have direct contact with the Greek pantheon but…..yeah. For as classic as Wonder Woman is, one thing she really isn’t is relatable. So this show could really go either way in my eyes, but it would be nice to see a take on a DC character that doesn’t follow the Smallville formula and put the character in high school.
