The Weekly Checkup: Doctor Who/Torchwood News and Views – October 22, 2011

Columns, News, Top Story

So, with no Doctor Who until December, and no word of Torchwood’s future, I was expecting some lean times. In fact, as of just a few hours ago (I am writing this on Friday), this column really had no major hook. And this Doctor Who News posted a hell of an interview with VH1…and it’s a bit of a game changer:

Is Matt Smith only doing one more season of Doctor Who?

Doctor Who News posted the following:

During his latest visit to the USA current Doctor Matt Smith spoke to VH1, who asked the actor about his future plans at that side of the Atlantic:

VH1: When are we going to have you?

Matt Smith: Well, hopefully soon, you know. I’ve got another year of Doctor Who, but then I’m certainly going to come and give it a shot, come and hang out in LA… as you say, people like Andy [Garfield] have come over, and he’s a mate of mine. I’m very proud to see him doing Spider-Man, ’cause we did a play together, and, you know, Spider-Man now. It’s incredible. And he’ll be brilliant, he’ll be so brilliant.

Readers in the United States can watch the full interview here:

Skitch Commentary: I know, I know, this doesn’t explicitly state that Matt Smith will be leaving Doctor Who after next season, but I really think it is heavily implied here. I will be very sad to see him go. Coming into the role after David Tennant was a very difficult thing to do, and I think Matt Smith has pulled it off admirably. He has brought a real “alienness” back to The Doctor, and just seems to really have a great deal of depth to the character. And he really has the “man man in a box” thing down pat.

I will definitely miss Matt Smith if he really is leaving. But it does fit. Most of the actors who have played the Doctor only stuck around for 3 or 4 years, with Tom Baker being the only real exception.

Hmm…does this mean we need to start speculating on who the next Doctor is? I actually think I would like to see the Doctor start to be played by older actors again. David Tennant and Matt Smith have both been brilliant, but so damn young. I would like to see the next Doctor be played by someone a little older. I actually have been thinking lately that I would love to see Malcolm McDowell in the role. Sorry, he’s been appearing in a lot of shows that I love lately (Psych and Franklin & Bash), and he’s always been a favorite.

Other choices that come to mind at Patrick Stewart or Alan Rickman. It would be kind of cool if they went for a female or black actor too.

How about the readers? Any thoughts on who you’d like to see take over the role?

Matt Smith Wins Spike Scream Award

According to Doctor Who News , Matt Smith has won the Best Science Fiction Actor award at the 2011 Spike Scream Awards. He was up against tough competition from Daniel Craig (Cowboys & Aliens), Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger), Harrison Ford (Cowboys & Aliens) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code).

Doctor Who lost the Best TV Show category to Game of Thrones while Karen Gillan lost out to Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil: Afterlife) in the Best Science Fiction Actress category.

Skitch Commentary: Congrats to Matt Smith,, especially since he managed to edge out Captain America and Han Solo….but how the hell does Karen Gillan lose to Milla Jovovich? She was robbed!  Still, it is always awesome to see Doctor Who getting more attention from American audiences.

Petition to have David Tennant Light Olympic Torch

I stumbled across this petition online, and thought you guys might enjoy it:

To the Olympics 2012 committee,

We wish for you to consider David Tennant as the official Lighter of the Olympic Flame. David portrays the Tenth Doctor on Doctor Who, a programme which has been part of our national consciousness for almost half a century and of which it can be said, captures the heart of being British more than an other piece of popular culture on television today.

David, as the Doctor, was seen lighting the Flame in an episode called “Fear Her” which featured the 2012 Olympics. We feel it would be entirely appropriate for him to be given this honour for real.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

Skitch Commentary: Kind of funny, Fear Her tends to get ripped up as a really bad Doctor Who episode (I actually disagree, but we can save that for another time), but fans want to memorialize in this way. I actually would love to see this happen.

Matt on Craig Ferguson

Matt wears a bowler hat now…bowler hats are cool! Matt always seems to have a lot of fun on Craig’s show, and this was no exception. I wish my DVR wasn’t always overflowing, because every time I watch Craig’s show (usually because a Doctor Who actor is on), I love the show and wish I could watch it more. It’s creative, clever, and outright insane.

TARDIS made of balloons

I’ve mentioned her before, but my friend and co-conspirator, Amy Madison loves to send me any cool Doctor Who pictures she comes across. She’s not even a fan! This week she sent me this, which she seemed to have found on the website The Mary Sue.com

This is just about the coolest balloon creation I have ever seen!! I definitely want one like this for my birthday!!

Dalek Pumpkin

Another friend, Maj, sent me this image:

You know….the pumpkin my daughter painted for my birthday rotted away. I am starting to suspect that this vile little Dalek Pumpkin might have been the culprit.

Ack, done all ready? Feels like I just got here. But that wraps it up for me this week. See you all next time!
