Wednesday Comments – NYCC Is Here!

Columns, Top Story

It’s October in NYC, which means it time for the New York Comic Con. Last year was my first time attending and it was quite the experience. To say that it was overwhelming would be an understatement.

The con floor is huge and there are so many booths set up. Movies, book publishers, video game companies, TV shows and of course comic book companies and vendors. It is the definition of sensory overload.

And despite how large the con floor is, it’s jam packed with people. While it’s awesome to see so many like-minded people sharing in their love for the same thing, it can also be a bit claustrophobic at times.

I’ll be attending panels and filing daily dispatches about them for Comics Nexus. And of course I’ll be checking out the con for myself as well. I always have a list of things that I’m looking for.

Naturally since the con is so large, it can be tricky remembering where you saw that good deal on Swamp Thing trades or where the booth that had an almost complete run of Damage was located. I’ve got a pretty good sense of direction and I was still struggling to return to placed I’d visited.

My list for NYCC this year is as follows.

Milestone Books – I’m always looking to complete my runs on Static, Icon and Hardware. I’m down to needing a handful of issues of Hardware and I’ve got over half of my Static and Icon runs completed.

The trouble with Milestone books is that you really have to search for them. You’ve got to dig into long boxes and put the time in. But a completed run is always worth is.

Sandman & Preacher – I’m collecting Sandman and Preacher via trades. I only need three more trades of Sandman and it seems like every booth is selling those trades. Preacher is almost as abundant. In terms of Preacher trades I’ve still got five to go.

Harley Quinn – I’ve written about this before, so I won’t dwell on it. But I’m still looking and I may always be looking.

100 Bullets – I’ve already got all of the issues, but I’ve decided to invest in the deluxe hardcover reissues. I’ve got a couple and if I can find a good deal on the rest I’ll complete the set.

Guy Gardner/Guy Gardner: Warrior – Here’s a book that’s a new addition to my track down list. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Guy Gardner, but I figured that I may as well give the book a shot, especially considering that it can usually be found in the 25¢ boxes.

Superboy & The Ravers – Why not? If I can find it, I’ll give it a shot.

So if you see me at NYCC, chances are that my backpack will be loaded with some or possibly all of these books. Feel free to offer to carry it for me.

Well, it’s Wednesday, which means you should be heading to your local comic shop to pick up some fresh new comic books.
