Box Office, News

In a crowded opening weekend, The Gift, actor Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut, has opened in third this Friday, according to Box Office Mojo. The film pulled in an estimated $585,000 in it’s opening night, following behind Fantastic Four, which grossed $2.7 million, and Shaun the Sheep, with $715,000.

The film has done surprisingly well with critics, holding strong on Rotten Tomatoes with a hearty 94%. The Gift is the story of Simon and Robyn, a young married couple, who happen to run into Simon’s old high school acquaintance, Gordo. After a series of mysterious gifts and troubling encounters, a secret from the past is uncovered after 20 years.

With the abysmal reviews of Fantastic Four pouring in and August being an historically anemic month for ticket sales, The Gift, with it’s surprising support from critics, is poised to do better than expected at the box office.
