I’d like everyone to get to know my new dog Mattingly. I got him Sunday from the North Shore Animal League, might I suggest that if you want a new dog or cat, you adopt instead of going to a breeder or a pet store. He’s two and is a mix between a Basset Hound and a German Shepherd.
I want to give thanks to a bunch of people who helped with this column knowing it or not. First, Dan Hevia, whose “The Crucifix” (it’s a symbol) was moved to Monday’s from Saturdays, gave me the idea of doing a year in review for RAW (you think I’d do a year in review for Smackdown!, who do I look like Brad Jennette?(who can be read over at GRUTMAN VS. NOT DANIELS this week)). And more than anyone, I’d like to thank PK for his Raw recaps that I’ve used to give myself (and you) this year long refresher course.
I’d also like to make a note that Widro and I both share a love for Avril Lavigne. Watch out soon for avril.insidepulse.com! Um…. or not. In tribute to the girl that will make Widro and I fight to the death one day, here is Avril in a bikini at the beach. Mmmmmmm….
DECONSTRUCTING THE MOVESET – A year of RAW part 1 of 4
Welcome to the year in review from Deconstructing the Moveset and the Inside Pulse. Being that I might just be the biggest RAW mark on the site, I’ll be your host through this month’s look at back at what 2004 was. We’ll be reviewing three months at a time in order to blanket the entire month with this look back at the past year.
We can’t really just jump into this year without taking a look at the state of RAW at the end of 2003.
2003 ended with one of the best matches of the year on RAW, with HHH vs. HBK for the title. the same night, the fate of Stone cold Steve Austin was in question as well. Austin was being decided on by the board of directors, he was given co-GM spot and he came back and said “no way, I want to be sheriff”. HBK lost the match, was fired by Uncle Eric and re-hired by Austin. Jericho and Christian were just getting into their feud about Trish and Lita, the bet had already been made and exposed, and Trish’s feelings were already hurt. Evolution was feuding with the Dudley Boyz, Booker T was feuding with Mark Henry, and Mick Foley and Randy Orton were doing their Hardcore Legend/Legend Killer angle.
That ended 2003.
January 2004
January 5th – 2004 started for RAW with how 2004 ends for Smackdown!. Teddy Long, after cashing in a favor from Uncle Eric from the 2003 Survivor Series, is the GM for a night. That’s about where the similarities end. Austin was our Sheriff.

Christian and Jericho have a tag match despite their bump in the road last week if Jericho wants it. Jericho then proceeds to go to the women’s locker room to accidentally tell Mae Young (in the shower) how he feels about Trish. Gross.
Kane says he’ll win the Rumble. Booker T interrupts and says the same thing.
HBK vs. HHH will be RAW’s title match at the Royal Rumble, but this time in a Last Man Standing match, as we’ve seen them in nearly every other type of match so far.

Goldberg came back on a technicality because Uncle Eric was too lazy to fill out the proper paperwork. Eric’s pissed at Austin. Steiner’s pissed at Goldberg, and announces he’ll be in the Rumble as well.
According to Orton, Foley’s a coward. And since they were in Long Island, (and Foley lives in Florida, but no one’s paying attention anyway) Orton left a front row seat for him at will call. Foley didn’t show.
Trish had a save for Jericho this week, but it backfires anyway. Stacy tells Trish she needs to tell Jericho how she feels. Jericho and Christian go for a night on the town (a night on the town on Long Island is a night at a late night diner by the way) and after they leave, Trish shows up to tell Jericho how she feels. Whoops.

Trust me, they can HAVE all my ex-girl friends on he island. Trish is the last thing on Jericho’s mind, Trish tries to try not being upset.

Goldberg talks to Terri as Lesnar want everyone to bask in the fact that he beat Hardcore Holly. Goldberg says Foley’s not the coward, but Lesnar is.

Jericho is beginning to look like a face. Jericho gets into a fight with Christian after talking to Trish about how they are such “good friends”. They discuss Trish, the 6 man tag & the Rumble. Christian’s upset Jericho eliminated him and he should “get his head out o his ass”
Orton’s pissed at Foley at the Rumble, Austin says Foley will get a chance to speak on the mic before any match is assigned.
HBK’s upset that HHH didn’t decisively win their Rumble match and wants another shot. Austin says that Benoit has the right to get a title shot and out comes Benoit! Benoit is now on RAW.
Coach makes fun of Eric for getting his ass handed to him at the Rumble by Heyman, Eric in turn makes a no DQ match between the Coach and Goldberg. Lesson of the day: don’t laugh at Uncle Eric.
Henry offers his services to Coach, but that doesn’t help him anyway. Goldberg goes on to say that Lesnar is next.
Foley demands to talk to Orton, then asks to get spit in the face again. Foley punches himself in the head, bleeding the old fashioned way in the process (absolutely awesome) and transforms to Cactus Jack, then proceeds to take down Orton, Flair and Batista as the show ends.
February 2nd –

Austin tells HBK that if he wants a shot at the title, he’s gotta do something about it.
Foley makes another appearance, and Test is upset that Foley eliminated him from the Rumble. This gives Orton a chance to sneak attack Foley.
Christian thinks that Trish is the Yoko Ono of the Jericho/Christian tag team and he tells her that.
Jericho, after taking a choke slam and gets his knee rammed into the post by Kane attempts to tell Trish how he really feels, but is cut off by Christian,
Orton and HBK have words backstage as HBK is cleaning off HHH’s blood from his boots from the Rumble. They have a match tonight.
HHH says that when people step into the ring with him, their dreams becomes nightmares. Next week is the contract signing for WMXX and Benoit will get to see HHH at his best. this leads to the HHH vs. Spike match.
Austin gives Goldberg a ticket to No Way Out to see Lesnar wrestle in person but, “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” Austin tells him.
Mick Foley caused Orton to be distracted, after the match Orton & Foley fight into the crowd, HHH comes in to beat up HBK, but Benoit makes the save and HHH backs off.

Shows starts off with Goldberg ready to fight, but Vince comes out instead to say he has a problem with Austin giving him that ticket to No Way Out. Cue Austin. Vince says he’s invited Heyman to RAW and out comes Heyman who says that Goldberg’s a big fish on RAW, but Lesnar’s a shark. Heyman gets speared, Goldberg goes for Vince, but Vince moves and Goldberg spears Austin. Whoops. After the commercial Goldberg says it was a mistake and should he expect a Stunner? Austin says if he gets one, it’ll be no mistake. Vince, pissed, walks into Uncle Eric’s office and says if Goldberg goes to No Way Out, it’s Eric’s ass.
After the mixed tag match, Christian says to Trish that if she and Jericho are friends, then they can all have a nice 3-way….. friendship going on. He tells her how pretty she looks today and goes in to check on Jericho’s knee which was injured last week.
Jindrak and Cade are looking at the Sable/Torrie Playboy and Stacy and Miss Jackie show up to say that they are hotter than Sable and Torrie. And they’re gonna prove it.
Contract signing:
HH reminds Benoit if he loses, all his hard work will have been for nothing, HBK comes out. HBK says that he can appreciate what Benoit’s done to get the title shot, Benoit says he has respect for HBK but it’s his time. HBK super kicks Benoit and signs the contract. Backstage later, Uncle says finds Benoit and says his lawyers will work it all out. Next week, Benoit vs. HBK!
Foley’s in the ring and says Orton went AWOL while he was a marine. Foley wants a 1 on 1 match at WMXX, and Orton’s on the Titan-Tron. Orton says Foley walked out in Tampa, how can he be sure he’ll show up to MSG? He also says he’s in catering waiting for Foley along with Batista and Flair. Foley takes the bait, gets beat up and called a bitch.
After the main event, Foley comes out to get RKO’d on the floor and RVD and Booker T get beat up by Flair and Batista

February 15th – NO WAY OUT
Goldberg arrives and is shown his front row seat.
Heyman comes out and taunts Goldberg but says stay in his seat. Lesnar comes out and challenges him to get in the ring, Goldberg does, avoids an F5 and Jackhammers Lesnar! He’s then escorted to the back by security who leads him away in handcuffs. Hardcore Holly comes out to the ring to have his match wit Rhyno and Lesnar runs away cause no one wants to be in the same ring as Holly.
Main event: Goldberg runs out mid match and spears Lesnar which gives Eddie the upper hand and eventually Eddie wins!
February 16th –

HHH starts the show b saying that he wants to know who he is fighting in the main event of WMXX, he doesn’t want to suffer the fate Yokozuna suffered at WMX (I was there, thanks for the tickets Russ). He demands Uncle Eric comes out and on cue, here’s Eric. Bisch says that he’ll cancel thee Benoit/HBK match tonight and let HHH decide who he’ll face, and defend the title tonight. Benoit comes out, says he only has one thing to say as he takes the mic from HHH. And that is – he beats up HHH, slaps on the Crossface, cue Evolution for the save, Benoit slips out of the ring.
Austin says that the title picture is fuzzy, Eric agrees, Austin says to straighten it out or Eric’s in violation of “Stone Cold’s Law”. Orton walks in, says he wants to finish his thing with Foley tonight, and Eric says it’s unsanctioned.
Jericho has to fight Kane with a bad knee and asks Christian if he should give Trish a late V-Day gift. Christian says to worry about Kane instead.
After Kane’s match, he says the Undertaker is “DEAD, DEAD, DEAD, DEAD, DEAD” and another rain storm pops up indoors and the “Dead shall rise” video plays again.
Jericho was taken to a hospital after his match, Christian saved Trish at the end of her match and they both find out they are going to check on Jericho. Christian says he’s gotta go grab something from the locker room and gives Trish Jericho’s rose!
Jackie and Stacy complain they aren’t in Playboy. Austin saves us from this and reminds Eric when he said he could kick Vince’s ass and asks if he thinks he could still do it. Eric says yes, Vince is standing behind him. Vince says he’s got a big announcement for next week’s RAW and will make it in his wrestling gear, after the announcement, we’ll see who can kick who’s ass.
Orton says the WMXX match is not gonna happen with Foley, and Foley comes out to get his ass kicked by Orton, Flair and Batista. Over and over and over again.
After the main event, HHH Pedigree’s HBK and Austin rolls out on his ATV and announces HHH vs. HBK vs. Benoit at WMXX!

Christian asks for a tag title shot at WMXX, but Uncle Eric never liked Jericho, so instead it’ll be Christian vs. Trish. Christian talks it over with Trish and says he’ll lie down for her, and later, she can lie down for him… if you get my drift. No, he’s just testing her to make sure she’s not two timing Jericho.
After the footage from 1999 of Eric taunting Vince to a fight at a WCW PPV is aired, Eric’s pissed but Austin tries to calm him down by saying that Eric’s made out with Linda AND Stephanie and Vince hasn’t fired him. Why would he now? Eric says he’s not afraid of Vince, Vince is 20 years older than him. And the whole time Vince is standing behind Eric and yells at him saying he’s going to the ring.
Evolution come out and HHH says he’s not scared of Benoit and he is the greatest there ever was. I’m paraphrasing, because it’s HHH speaking. Benoit comes out and gets beat up, HBK come out and they clear house, followed by Benoit slapping the Crossface on HBK. Austin comes out and declares that the Benoit vs. Batista match will have no one from Evolution at ring side or they won’t make it to WMXX.
JR interviews Foley from the previous weekend, asks if he’s done with wrestling, Foley says he’ll be at RAW next week. Also says that no one saved him last week while he was getting beat down for 6 minutes straight, and that maybe the wrestlers haven’t forgiven him for walking out in December.
McMahon is in the ring ready to make a WMXX announcement, but Stacy/Jackie come to the ring demanding a match against Torrie/Sable. Vince gives it to them in a “Playboy Evening Gown Match.” He’s about to continue but cue Kane to scream at McMahon for the Undertaker not being dead. Vince makes Kane vs. the Undertaker at WMXX. He goes on to say that no one can contain Brock vs. Goldberg, so it won’t happen. Glass shatters and Austin says he can referee the match. Vince likes the idea and Austin’s gonna referee the main event of Vince vs. Eric.

La Resistance complains that the wrong man got pinned last week, for their troubles Austin comes out and Stunners Rene Dupree and chases Conway out of the ring. Austin talks about Brock and Goldberg and is cut off by Vince. Austin chases out of the ring area, through backstage and Vince jumps into his limo, Austin follows riding his ATV ON TOP OF THE LIMO revving the engine over Vince’s head in the sunroof. Austin drives off the limp and the limo speeds away.
“Johnny Blaze” introduces himself to Bischoff when Austin charges in asking if Eric had anything to do with the F5 he got last week, Eric says no. Molly comes in saying she’ll do anything to get her title back. Eric says she’s got a match against Victoria at WMXX, but Austin says only if she’s willing to put her hair on the line. Molly says she doesn’t wanna be a bald freak, and Austin stares her down. “Blaze” introduces himself to Austin, Austin leaves.
Rico introduces Stacy/Jackie in the ring and Kane comes out and destroys Rico and Stacy/Jackie run out of the ring. Kane says there will be no resurrection at WMXX, but a persecution. The monk music plays and two Undertaker symbols are on either side of the titan tron, and they’re on fire!
During the Benoit/HBK vs. Batista/Orton, HBK prevents Benoit from swan diving, Benoit hits the head butt on both Orton AND HBK. After the match HHH comes down and it’s Pedigrees for all. Yaay!
The Highlight Reel:
No Jericho on the show, it’s Christian’s Peep Show. HE recaps beat up Trish and calls it tough love. He then says he got Eric to make Jericho vs. Christian for WMXX. Jericho will never EEEEEVER be the same, Agayn. But Jericho shows up and beats up Christian.
Foley gets into the ring and calls out Orton, who bring Batista and Flair with him. Orton offers the one on one match, but Foley says no dice cause it’ll never be truly one on one. He wants the three of them against him and a partner of his choice. Orton knows where this is going (because all of us internet folk had been talking about this for a few days now) and says that he can call Mr. Walking Tall. Foley says tell it to his face and the Rock comes out and Foley and the Rock house Evolution, and the Rock gives the People’s Elbow to Orton.

the show start on an upbeat note with a coffin in the ring. Kane comes to the ring, knocks over the casket to find an urn. He throws the casket out of the ring (almost doesn’t get it over the top rope) and yells he’s not afraid of the Undertaker. The ring starts to rise off of the floor in a neat effect.
Jericho’s sorry that he could help her a few weeks ago, and says so on the phone. Christian jumps Jericho, grabs the phone and says Jericho’s in the same position Trish is used to – on her back. Christian leaves the arena afterwards.
The Rock is confronted by the Hurricane. Last time they fought, Hurricane won proving the Scorpion King is no match for the Hurricane. They laugh it off and Hurricane says he saw Walking Tall and it was god, Rosey missed it cause he went to buy candy and got lost. But he sure saw Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (starring Lindsay Lohan, of course). Coach comes in and says the Rock is sporting the Coach’s look. The rock basically says “Coach Sucks” and shoves him. Hurricane and Rosey fly off, and the Rock looks upward as they do so.
“Johnny Blaze” is now “Johnny Spade” and is a agent of Bischoff’s.
The Rock presents “Mick Foley: This is your life”. He brings out the woman who owned the house Foley jumped off of as a teenager. She used to serve the boys cookies, milk and some mouth watering pie. Rock does his usual play on words and she says her back door is always open for strudel. Gross. Next we have Superfly Jimmy Snuka. Foley says thank you to Superfly and the old woman is staring at Superfly’s ass. Again, gross. They leave together, and the Rock brings out the first guy to write a bad review of “Have A Nice Day!” and the guy proceeds to make fun of the Rock’s performance in Walking Tall, he gets a Socko for his troubles. The Coach is looking for the Undertaker and stumbles on Mean Gene and Heenan pulling up their pants. They say they were playing poker but out walk Moolah and Mae Young. Again, gross.
After the Jericho/Christian match, Trish and Jericho argue in the ring a little, Trish slaps Jericho and BAM! Jericho gets an Unprettier. That bitch! She swerved Jericho! That Jezebel! They even kiss on the entrance ramp!
The rock pumps Foley up with while being interviewed by Lillian Garcia, says “Finally the Rock has come back to New York City and finally, Mick Foley is home.”
Eddie pumps up Benoit by saying that he has no chance of winning. Eddie wanted the wolverine he took on night after night in Japan. Benoit says he thinks they’re both leaving as champions tonight. Benoit says that he believes in himself, I tried to get a “I BE-LIEVE” chant going but it didn’t work. That would have been one awesome chant if I got it going.
The crowd was all over Goldberg and Lesnar, and they had a right to be, Lesnar and Goldberg had both previously said that this would be their last WWE match. Lesnar, also pissed at the internet said he would “kill” anyone he found leaking info to the internet. Loud “You Sold Out”s to Lesnar as he was leaving to try to be in the NFL (he did REAL WELL with that move). Austin stuns everyone and the crowd finally is happy that this abortion is over.
Vince comes out and thanks everyone for the success for Wrestlemania for the last 20 years.
After the main event, Eddie and Benoit celebrate in the ring, as does Benoit’s family in one of the most touching Wrestlemania moments ever.
Interesting notes for the first three months:

The Dudley Boyz (0-5 each), The Superheros (Rosey 0-3, Hurricane 0-6) and Matt Hardy (0-5) did not win ONE televised RAW match between January 1st and WMXX.
RVD (6-4) and Booker T (7-3) were tied with most matches between January 1st and WMXX at 10.
Batista (8-9) and Victoria (5-0) have the longest winning streaks between January 1st and WMXX with 5, Victoria’s had not yet been broken either.
Victoria (5-0), Golberg (4-0) and Stevie Richards (2-0) each went undefeated between January 1st and WMXX.
