The Review

Story

While unveiling the real, true, never-before-told origin of a pretty well-established character is hardly new in the comics genre, its uber scribe Geoff Johns’ execution of said contrivance that is a worthy read in Green Lantern Rebirth #3.

Most of the questions are answered in this issue. Johns’ knows his Green Lantern mythology. Readers learn more about:

>> The yellow impurity that is at the heart of the giant power battery on the planet OA that fueled the old Green Lantern Corps rings.

>> Is Kyle Rayner’s, DC’s latest decade-old Green Lantern, ring really that different from Hal’s old one?

>> The Spectre’s motivation behind making Hal Jordan its newest host.

>> Who is reviving dead Green Lantern Corps members and controlling them and DC’s other GLs?

>> Why didn’t Hal Jordan use “Just for Men” hair colouring a decade ago to cover up his silver streaks?

I won’t spoil this issue for you as Geoff Johns weaves an engaging yarn that not only ties all of the above together, but has enough slack in it to put a bow on top… With Green Lantern Rebirth #3 slipping under the Christmas tree as a great holiday read.

We also get two great reveals or cliffhangers in this issue. One is not wholly unexpected (hint: Hal Jordan’s nefarious alter ego), and the other, while not totally self-evident, flows from the earlier reveal about the yellow impurity. That was a welcome cliffhanger ending.

You don’t know much about Hal Jordans’s dense history? No problem. Green Lantern Rebirth #3 walks you through his world and helps it make sense to veteran and newer fans.

A solid creative effort by Geoff Johns, the man who also pulled Hawkman from purgatory and made him readable again.

Johns using continuity as a springboard for an excellent story. More writers should instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water.
