Things take a turn for the supernatural in this third issue of the telling of the origin of Dr. Strange. After a near-miss with a few demons (!), Strange finally meets up with Wong, along with the old man from the mountain in Tibet. In a nutshell, he is introduced to the supernatural, and he is (rightly) skeptical. However, his skepticism is for naught, as the last couple of pages show. Perhaps Dr. Strange is finally gaining “the sight”?

Straczynski and Barnes continue to craft an excellent telling of the untold story of Dr. Strange, and how he came to be. This issue lays the seeds for explaining just why a brilliant surgeon would become the Sorcerer Supreme. There’s also enough conflict and mystique about the story to ensure that I’ll be back for the fourth round.

Brandon Peterson’s art is a perfect complement to the writing. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but somehow it just “fits” this book. His cover looks reminiscent of the work of Frank Quitely, but not so much in the interior.
