In my review for the latest issue of Ultimate X-Men, I mentioned that Brian K Vaughn wrote three great books last week. This one is by far the best.

I’ve been a fan of this title from the start, and every month I am always excited to get it. Its got one of the greatest hooks of any comic I’ve ever read. And it’s a simple one; it’s in the title, “The Last Man”. But every month, they take that hook and expand on it. Now, about halfway through the run of this series, we are immersed in a world of great characters and thoroughly thrilling stories. To top it off, this comic has a great cliffhanger in every single issue. Nothing, not even Vaughn’s other books, can beat that.

This month, we see Yorick looking for a reporter who is going to publish proof that there is in fact a man alive. This, for myriad reasons, would not be good. So we have that main story going on. But that’s not it by half. We are given looks into the past of some of the supporting players, and this is really what makes the book what it is. Vaughn injects a lot of character in everyone he writes, and much like in Ultimate X-Men, you really do care about these people. And it seems every month we are given a new reason to do so, because we are constantly show what really makes these characters tick.

Pia Guerra’s art works perfectly, never being too stylish. Some may prefer more flashy artwork, but Guerra’s work is great for a story without any superhero elements. I hope she never leaves the book.

So what else can I say to you? Just go get this book, and get all the trades too.
