The Weekly Pulse: TV's Second Wife

Archive

I am back and feeling good this week! The air is cooler, the water is cooler, the ice is cooler, um..yeah..I’m all out of things here. But it is cooler here in the South. Yeah..it’s like in the 60’s, but that is cool for here! Of course..it will be back up to 90 by Christmas..but what do you do.

Anyways..gather your family around the old computer screen and join me for the week that was here on Pulse TV! What..you say..your family doesn’t want to read what you are reading? Okay..fine..tell them it’s their loss! But they will be missing my discussion on “Family TV Hour” later and no one wants to miss that! In fact, if this column was a TV show..it would be on NBC’s MUST SEE TV night! Right between ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Friends’..back in the good old days!

You have to see it..you have to read it! Actually, I don’t know how many people DO read this every week. I know of 2 people for sure, but other than that..it’s a little iffy. Oh well..I must go on. I won’t stop until everything written this week has been plugged up tighter than..well you can add your own jokes here. I have work to do! So lets get crackin’!

Seinfeld Quote of the Week

“Not that there’s anything wrong with that!” (In The Outing, Jerry denies that he is gay, but does not want to be seen as homophobic.)”Jerry Seinfeld

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Columns a.k.a. If You Miss This..You Suck!

Mathan Erhardt has your designation for fun and all things TV! Too bad that he was playing video games all week..and therefore missed a few shows! Shame on you! You’re FIRED! Maybe not, but this week he only comments on ‘Lost’, ‘The Office’, ‘Rome’, ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’, ‘Boston Legal’, ‘Nip/Tuck’, ‘Over There’, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Desperate Housewives’, and ‘Reunion. Damn..that’s a long list and he STILL missed some shows. Okay..he still has his job. Go back to playing your game..Matt!

Murtz gets his interview on with Melissa Holovatch! She was the first one fired by Donald Trump! How nice. She what she is REALLY like!

Sarah Quigley rides on Sunday nights! And this week she talks about ‘The Apprentice’. I gave the show a shot, but gave up halfway through. Oh well..you can still check out Sarah’s comments on that same episode! Go now!

Matt Basilo answers the riddle from last week and it flies like an eagle! He also has comments on ‘Lost’, ‘Nip/Tuck’, and ‘Smallville’. And some ‘Newhart’ errors in ‘Coach’!

Dora Malone rambles random thoughts from her brain. It sounds something like ‘Survivor’, but who can tell. Maybe something about “Stephen”. You just have to find out for yourself!

Kevin Wong has a little bit of this and that. He recommends a TV show on DVD and I agree with him! More talk about ‘The Ultimate Fighter 2’ and as always, predictions for ‘Survivor’ and ‘The Amazing Race’. Go now and laugh at him later for his wrongness!

Patrick Gilchriest is back for his standard ‘Survivor’ talk. Everything you need to know about that show is right here, but of course!

Dan Wentzel is all about ‘Survivor’ as well. So scratch what I said above. After reading Patrick and Dan..you will be full of ‘Survivor’ goodness!

Recaps a.k.a. Stop Watching Baseball!

Patrick Puhl blames the rain for his late recap of ‘America’s Next Top Model’. Sure..blame it on the rain! And then blame your dad for taping over the last episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. Get with the program..Patrick. Anyways..here is this week’s episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’! Wait..I take that back. Because he is on time for the next episode of ‘America’s Next Top Model’. So three recaps in a week?! Props!

Matt Basilo has episode #4 of ‘Smallville’.

Kevin Wong can always be counted on to have his recap of ‘Numb3rs’! And the race continues. We go outside of the U.S. for ‘The Amazing Race: Family Edition’! HA!

Scott Keith is back to work after a month. ‘Prison Break’ is back! And that means ‘The O.C.’ is around the corner! YES!

John Duran goes solo this week for ABC. No new ‘Lost’, so it’s just the DH, ‘Desperate Housewives’!

Paul Meekin does the reality TV two-step with Martha and then with Donald!

Tim Stevens has another creepy episode of ‘Nip/Tuck’ for you!

Craig Russell is rolling along with the ‘Gilmore Girls’!

Trevor MacKay tells us that ‘Invasion’ is MUST SEE!

Joey Hart has ‘The Biggest Loser’. I missed it this week, so thanks Joey!

Sarah Quigley ends the week for us with, what else but ‘Survivor’!

Celebrities..just Celebs a.k.a. What Else Do You Need?

Murtz and former ‘Survivor’, Eliza, are back. They hope a few pictures will bring in more readers. Worth a shot, but maybe a shot of Murtz WOULD bring more in, since everyone will want to laugh at him! Just kidding..boss!

Former ‘Apprentice’, John, is here once again to share his thoughts. He even busts out a rap! Wow!

Former ‘Survivor’, Penny, returns to give her thoughts on the latest episodes of ‘Survivor: Guatemala’.

Former ‘Survivor’, Coby comes back to tell everyone the truth, even if his friends hate him now!

Former ‘Apprentice’, Nick has some ‘The Apprentice’ thoughts and predictions!

Former ‘Apprentice’, Michael, is back as well to give his thoughts on ‘The Apprentice’. Zathura!

Erin has some more fashion of ‘The Apprentice’. Time to put on those jeans!

The Weekly Pulse Weekly Poll

Last week I asked the question…”what do you think about The O.C.?”. Yep..some question, but you answered it! So here are the results

I LOVE it! – 4
I HATE it! – 1
I used to LOVE it, but now I have lost interest in it! – 2
I have never seen an episode, so I have no opinion! – 4

Well this was an interesting vote. I thought I would get more “hate it” votes, but I didn’t. So it looks like everyone either loves it or has never seen the show. That means they don’t know what they are missing. And seeing as how I have turned a “never seen it” person into a “love it” person..I figure that is just about the same. Once you try it..you’ll be hooked! Right muffin?! (Inside joke..for those wondering.)

Now to this week’s question. It’s about families and television. The question is…”Does family television still exist today?” That’s the question..deal with it. Go vote here and do it NOW!

Time to Talk a.k.a. Family TV Hour a.k.a. No Such Thing

I want to talk about Family TV. What is “family” TV today? Good question. This actually comes from a post that has been running around on the forums. The PTC (Parents Television Council) came out with their top ten and bottom ten family programs for television. The link is here.

Family TV hour is dead! It’s a new age. I don’t think families sit down to watch TV together as much as they used to. Lets face it..there is a TV in most every room of the house. So really..children can watch what they want when they want. Now I am not saying that kids should be watching TV shows made for adults. And I don’t agree with “adult cartoons” like Fox’s Sunday night lineup, since some parents think that all cartoons are good for children to watch. Not true.

But family TV is dead! Only 9 shows could be made for the top ten list of good shows for families. That is proof enough. Family TV shows just don’t make any money. Why? Because families don’t watch TV together like they used to! It’s simple really. Really..if you want to spend time as a family, you can do many other things than watch TV together. You can spend more quality time away from a TV as a family.

TV is becoming more of a personal thing. There are so many channels..that anyone could watch what they want when they want. Which is why this list is kinda stupid. It only accounts for the major networks. Well..there are specific TV channels that target children. Let them watch that. But guess what? Parents don’t want to watch the same thing. Thus, family TV hour is dead!

We have too many options these days. We have more than 4 channels now. Primetime doesn’t have to be family TV time. It can be whatever you want to make it. The bottom line is that parents have to do their research. They can find out about these shows before their kids watch it. They can know what they are getting into before they sit down with their kids and watch TV.

And what is with them picking on certain time slots. Again..I will say that with new technology..we can watch TV whenever we want. Yes..7 – 10 p.m. (central time) could be considered primetime for TV viewing, but that is not always the case. Yes..you can push “adult” shows back to times where kids are supposed to be in bed. But they have televisions in their rooms. They can watch it if they want to. Unless, you as a parent, decide that they shouldn’t watch those shows. There are ways to prevent kids from watching certain TV shows.

Again..Hollywood wants to make money. And if they saw that families actually did sit down and watched shows together, then maybe they would put more “family shows” on the air. But if the ratings are not good, why even try. It’s up to the families. If a “family show” is good, people will watch it and it will stick around. If people don’t watch it, then Hollywood goes another direction. It’s simple..really. Maybe it shouldn’t be that way, but it is. It’s a new era. If you don’t like it, change the channel. You have hundreds of other options! Better yet..play a game together as a family. Sometimes that could be a better way to spend a few hours than watching TV.

Okay..well that does it for me this week. Any comments, questions, or suggestions are always welcome. Make sure to vote on the poll and read up on the week that was. You know what to do.

“When you are at the VERY bottom, it can only get better..you can ONLY go up!”

“I’m going to be hot before it gets hot!”

Finally..“You Can’t Fight Fate!”. See you next week!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
