HEY!

I AM ACTUALLY LOVING MARVEL RIGHT NOW!

THIS PAST WEEK WAS A TREASURE TROVE OF COMICS!

WHO TOLD MARVEL THAT DC WAS KICKING THEIR ASS?

Oh … That’s right … It was…

For those who don’t know, I write a wrestling report here at Inside Pulse. There is a tradition I’ve come to know in the last year of writing both wrestling reports. It’s that members of the internet wrestling community have this silly belief that their words change the direction of the product. Us comic book fans have always known that, as we vote with our dollars.

That’s why I’m taking full credit for Marvel being awesome this past week.

Why? Because I bought comics. If you bought Son of M, X-Factor, or any of the other damn good books that we’ve seen this past week… you too can take credit.

Just put my name first. Let’s get to the news.

JENKINS RECREATES LEGENDS
(From Newsarama)

Something announced at San Diego this past year was Mythos, which is a more dramatic retelling of the original X-Men’s first fight with Magneto.

In the tradition of me not wanting things ruined for myself, I didn’t READ the preview pages at the above link, but I did look at them, and they seem to be one of those books that is going to be what you hand someone who wonders what the power of the medium is. Hand painted books always do that.

I’m in.

DECIMATED… Pffft… ANNIHILATED!!!!!!!
(From Newsarama)

In the tradition of huge events, Marvel is now going to be going crazy with all of the possible repercussions of the last big event. Now it’s time for Annihilation which covers the cosmos with an issue to start us off – followed by four mini-series that follow the journeys of some of Marvel’s outer space friends. NOVA, SILVER SURFER, SUPER-SKRULL, and RONIN THE ACCUSER all being written by high profile writers (Respectively: Dan Abnett, Keith Giffen, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and Transformers own Simon Furman.)

I’m not a huge interstellar sci-fi guy, so this might be something I kind of ignore. We’ll see. Either way, it ends in a huge ANNIHILATION book that will run six issues… kind of like an Infinite book of some Crisis or another over at the Distinguished Competition.

Careful Joe… you are treading on noticeable waters.

DOTCOMICS? WILL THERE BE PORN?
(Courtesy of Newsarama)

If you go check out Marvel.Com, they posted up a couple new full digital comics for people to read. You can check some of the pages out for free, and then there is a registration.

It’s a neat idea, but there will always be people who are going to want to see their pulp. If you read anything about Marvel doing this, you will immediately see that Quesada is doing it, more to appease people than support it. It doesn’t feel like he really cares one way or the other about the future of the digital media.

My opinions on it? I generally don’t think it will have a huge place in the world of print comics, and they should probably spend their time putting out a book like Franklin Richards in the Digital format than trying to just repaint Marvel books.

Hell, SOMEONE does TWO webcomics. I don’t know WHO that could be…. but I know he does love pimping

CITY OF HEROES & MARVEL COLLIDE!
(From Newsarama)

For those who don’t know City of Heroes is an MMORPG online where you play as superheroes trying to stop the world of evil. You can create characters that kind of look like characters you might know. Just the other day I played with someone who looked like the Joker who called himself ‘The Comedian’. Sadly, he didn’t understand my Watchmen reference….

Marvel didn’t like the idea that you could create characters that look KINDA like Captain Marvel or Speedball… so they got into it legally with COH. The real reasons are going to be lost in comic infamy for a time, but it makes sense that Marvel’s worry was that their intellectual properties might have been in trouble.

Well they settled. With no trumpets. With no fanfare. It is written. It is done. The repercussions will only become known when someone else tries to mess with Marvel’s copyrights more legitimately.

THIS WEEK’S ‘OTHER’ VARIANT!
(From Newsarama)

In the tradition of week after week, getting 2nd printing variants for The Other storyline. I give to you….. SPIDEY-ARMOR!

Wait though”¦ there is more to this story……………

Then variant cover second printings for the final three chapters will be offered to retailers as incentive variants, meaning the number retailers can order depends on their orders for the first printings/standard cover.

Welcome to an asshole maneuver. Full and through if you have been collecting the variant covers, which I could easily see someone doing because they are exceptionally pretty, and hopefully will make a nice poster someday… Marvel is taking the last three… and making them incentive variants. Now they become hot items and not the interesting fun thing to pick up. They become things to hunt for.

Way to alienate Marvel.

WHAT’S SO CIVIL ABOUT WAR ANYWAY
(From Newsarama)

I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this, as the announcements are still being vague. This is where we are headed. Civil War. It seems that the Marvel Illuminati see that there is change on the horizon and they are going to split on how to fix it.

The most powerful men in the world might then shake it down to its core.

Intriguing enough for me to hold off til they give us a full press release.

THIS COLUMN ISN’T LONG ENOUGH YET!
Newsarama)

SOLICITS TIME BAYBE! That’s right… it’s time to sit and discuss the cool things coming out in the next couple months.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #91 & 92 – Two words: Ultimate Deadpool. If Bendis screws this up… I’m going to send him death threats about sheep guns.

FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #6 – Spidey in a wrestling ring… I’m there. SO there.

SQUADRON SUPREME #1 – JMS is back with his reconsidered Squadron. It seems it’s Government vs. Supers, I just want to know how he’s going to introduce ALL of these new characters.

MARVEL ZOMBIES #4 – I asked for it, so I get it! The X-Men are zombified… and they look awesomely gross.

MS. MARVEL #1 – A note… I think I found Dani’s Haloween costume for Halloween… or Christmas… or… well whatever really!

CABLE/DEADPOOL #26 – Cable smells Apocalypse in the air…. yay! The boys hit mainline continuity!

POWERS #18 – Blade runner cover. Nuff said.

MINI-REVIEWS!

Books Of Doom #2 – Continuing a line of strong books by Brubaker, Books of Doom is a great retelling of the Dr. Doom story. Its narrative style continues to make me wonder if we are going to find out why Doom is telling us all of these trivial details of his past.

Cable/Deadpool #23 – All of the story ties together in the end… at least as much as a convoluted story of triple-crossing mercenaries can ever be complete. The comedy wasn’t as on in this issue, but there were a couple great fourth wall jokes that deserve their praise.

New X-Men #21 – My local comic store didn’t pull #20 for me by accident. By the time I tried to find it, it was sold out. So I came in a bit after the fact, but the new writing team seems to have a great handle on what is going on, and the teenage tone is perfect.

Secret War #5 – Umm…. it came out! So….. good. Now we know that Fury’s gone… which we knew already…. and..err… the new chick looks like Angelina Jolie… …..whee?

Son of M #1 – And the new writing god emerged… Hine be thy name.

Uncanny X-Men #467 – I’ve given up trying to figure out Claremont. THe last few months I can’t seem to help but enjoy his books. New Excalibur #2 was a step back… but End of Greys is a GREAT return to his story telling.

X-Factor #1 – Peter David is back and he wears these characters like an old pair of jeans that your girlfriend keeps wanting to throw out because of the holes in the crotch. Yeah.. Peter David writes the best holy crotch ever! …yes.. that was a compliment.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! GET LOST!

Given the length of the column – I’m skipping the movies section next week… all you need to know is that Ghost Rider has been pushed back until 2007.

That’s it. I’m done. Kicking a vicious headache. Plus Closer is on… and Natalie Portman has got pink hair. Do you really think this column is important anymore?

Seriously though, I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas, and if there is a column next week (as I write these damn things on Sunday) – I’ll tell you all the cool swag I got!

Also here is an updated list on what gave this strip it’s namesake. Here is an updated list of who is our 198 Mutants… we’re up to 49, and if I’m seemingly missing anyone.. drop me a line. I’d love to hear from you.

Bye all!
