The Weekly Pulse: TV's Second Wife

Archive

I hope everyone is having a good 2006! The year is FLYING by! Maybe not, but it sure is a lot of fun! I told you there would be more drama this year and it all started on New Year’s Eve! I had a FANTASTIC night, morning, and day! Oh yeah..and night again! That’s all I will say, but the year started off right! Now let the rumors and drama begin! YES!

Anyways..we are still another week away from new shows. I blame college football and the “bowl season”. The Rose Bowl game between USC and Texas got almost 2 times as many viewers as ‘Lost’ would get in the same timeslot! In fact, that game got more viewers than the 5 other major networks combined on Wednesday! They should just play every week. Or maybe not.

Um..not much else to say. So lets get this thing going. Not much to read this week, so savor every moment of it!

Seinfeld Quote of the Week

“The sea was angry that day my friend, like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli!”George

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Columns a.k.a. The Light Edition IV

Mathan Erhardt had NOTHING to watch on TV so, like me, he watched DVD’s and he watched “On Demand”, unlike me. He watched ‘Six Feet Under’ on “On Demand” and watched ‘The Simpsons’ on DVD. Fair enough. Next week..maybe this dreaded cycle will end! Then again..I’m not sure any new shows returned this week either..so probably another week of nothing! Oh well!

Matt Basilo is back for his first column of the year. Since nothing is on TV, he talks about his New Year’s Eve. Always fun to read. He also talks a little bit about ‘Lost’ and the power of DVD! I know about that fairly well.

Dora Malone kicks off her DICS (Dora’s InsidePulse Controversy about Survivor) series of columns. She gives you a statement and then tries to prove her point. You can agree or disagree. Sounds like fun. Good luck to her. This week she tells you who the best woman to play ‘Survivor’ EVER is! Who is it according to her? Find out for yourself!

Kevin Wong has his first column of the year. He talks about a few things. Mainly..just what he watched this week, which included a bunch of food shows and some tasty pictures of Rachael Ray! Nothing wrong with that.

Recaps a.k.a. The Light IV Sequel: Light Until the End!!

I am the only one again to have a new episode to recap this week! Yay for me! It’s the latest episode of the ‘Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet II’! Check that out..then check out Katie later!

This week we had 2 DVD reviews!

Murtz is so bored..he does a DVD review of his own! This time it’s Murder One – The Complete Second Season. He says the shows paved the way for shows like ‘Lost’ and ’24’..go see why. You have nothing else to do!

John Cavanagh reviews Viva La Bama: Complete Seasons 4 & 5. It’s a spinoff of ‘Jackass’

Celebrities and Spoilers a.k.a. All You Need is Katie and some Spoilers!!

MTV star, Katie, returns to give you her insight on the ‘Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet II’. She was on the show and I recap the show. So she is like my tag team partner. Obviously..she is the star, so check out her thoughts on episode 2, episode 3, episode 4, and
episode 5! WOW..she was busy! Thanks Katie!

Now time for some more SPOILERS!!! Be warned! Romo has spoiled the newest episode of ‘Desperate Housewives’ for you! Along with some spoilers for ‘Lost’. Click the links if you can’t wait any longer!

The Weekly Pulse Weekly Poll

A week and half ago..I asked the question…”what day of the week is your favorite for TV watching?” So here are the results:

Sunday! – 0
Monday! – 2
Tuesday! – 2
Wednesday! – 4
Thursday! – 2
Friday! – 0
Saturday! – 0

This was a close one! But Wednesday pulled it out. I figured Monday-Thursday would get the most votes, but it was pretty much split evenly. A little shocked that Sunday didn’t get any, but weekends usually suck for watching TV..so it understandable. I guess ‘Lost’ pulled out the win for Wednesdays, though! My streak continues as that question had NOTHING to do with what I talked about.

Now onto this week’s question. It has to do with what I will be talking about later. And I do have an opinion. But you will find that out later. Anyways…the question is..“which NEW midseason show interests you the most in January?” Simple enough. So click on the link and VOTE NOW! Remember..VOTE OR DIE!

Time to Talk a.k.a. It’s Winter Premiere Time!!

The month is January. Telvision is about to return to..well..TV! The holiday season is over and the reruns are almost gone until the summer time. All your favorite shows return to continue where they left off from November or early December. All the writers here are jumping up and down in joy..I know. But January marks another important part of the TV season!

It’s time for the Winter Premiere of television! It’s also known as time for midseason shows to take the air. This used to be a time where the networks would air shows that they didn’t have much hope for. They just threw out these new shows after Christmas and didn’t expect them to last very longer. That has all changed over the part few years, though. Network TV has had to keep up with the cable channels. Cable channels don’t follow the September – May TV season. They introduce new shows all year long. Thus, network TV must do the same to keep up. So January is now the time to introduce new shows that the major networks DO have hope for. They want these shows to bring in new viewers.

For example, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ was a midseason show for ABC last year. It followed ‘Desperate Housewives’, which helped it get viewers. However, once people saw the show..they saw a VERY strong show. That kept its viewers and many believe it is better than ‘DH’ now. That is an example of a new show catching on as a “midseason show”.

But what about returning shows for networks in January? ’24’ and ‘American Idol’ always debut in January. They are two of the top shows for FOX as far as ratings go. Fans of those shows can’t wait for January. That helps other shows on FOX as ads for other shows appear during those two shows.

With all of that in mind, what new midseason shows will air in 2006? ABC has ‘Emily’s Reasons Why Not’, ‘Crumbs’, and ‘In Justice’. CBS has ‘Courting Alex’ and ‘Love Monkey’. NBC has ‘The Book of Daniel’ and ‘Four Kings’. FOX has ‘Skating With the Stars’, and UPN has ‘Get This Party Started’ and ‘South Beach’. Lets see..I did catch ‘Four Kings’ last night and it wasn’t so bad. I am not sure if anything was there to keep me around. I may need another watch. Any other show I will watch? Umm..well this may break one of my resolutions. Or I should say..it may keep my New Year’s Resolution, which would cause the world to collapse as that NEVER happens. But I think I will try to catch ‘Love Monkey’ based on some recommendations. However, if these shows don’t blow me away at first like ‘My Name is Earl’, ‘Everybody Hates Chris’, and ‘How I Met Your Mother’..then they may not get another shot. I will give them a chance, though.

All these new shows debuting in January are more important than ever for networks. You see..a little thing called the Winter Olympics starts on February 10. It will air on NBC. That is why NBC is starting its midseason shows earlier than other networks. They have to debut them before the Olympics takes over its programming. It’s also important for the other networks to debut their new shows before February as well. They have to get these new shows out there..so that fans will continue to watch them instead of the Olympics. They have to keep their viewers. It is almost like what FOX did with baseball, but the Olympics will draw better ratings than the Olympics..more than likely.

The Olympics this year also basically created another part of the television season this year. More new shows and returning shows will wait to air until March. They will air after the Olympics! So..the midseason shows will be split up. Truly..this year..network TV will be going with year-round programming! It’s an exciting time for fans of network TV. I still like cable more, but network TV is closing the gap in my opinion!

Well that does it for me again this week. Any comments, questions, or suggestions are always welcome.

“Life Ain’t Always Beautiful, but It’s a Beautiful Ride!”

And as always remember…“You Can’t Fight Fate!”. See you next week!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
