The Weekend Tease

Archive

V for Vendetta reigns supreme; She’s the Man was a Barbie girl delight; and Failure to Launch proves to have legs even though the romantic comedy has cruel intentions. Even critics were surprised to find out that Vin Diesel could act in his latest film Find Me Guilty. With a hair piece no less.

Looking at my trusty desk calendar I see we are only six weeks away from the start of Summer Movie Season. A season filled with mutants, shoot’em ups, car chases, pirates, a capsized ocean liner, and an impossible mission. And that’s just for starters.

But until then we must take what Hollywood gives us. This week we only have three new releases. In some cases less is more, but I’m sure one of these will be at the top of the box office come Monday while the other two die horrible deaths.

Here is what’s going down at the weekend of 3/24 – 3/26/06.

Inside Man – March 24, 2006. Rated R (for language and some violent images). The Tagline: It looked like the perfect bank robbery. But you can’t judge a crime by its cover.

Directed by Spike Lee, written by Russell Gewirtz and produced by Brian Grazer, Inside Man is the story of a tough cop, Detective Frazier (Denzel Washington), who matches wits with a clever bank robber, Dalton (Clive Owen), in a tense hostage drama. As the dangerous cat-and-mouse game unfolds, a wild card emerges: Madaline (Jodie Foster), a power broker with a hidden agenda who injects eve more instability into an already volatile situation.

Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector – March 24, 2006. Rated PG-13 (for crude and sexual content, and for language). The tagline: They’ll give anyone a badge.

Irreverent as ever, Larry The Cable Guy plays a big city health inspector who’s happy with his usual beat of greasy spoon diners and low-rent ethnic restaurants. His easygoing life is turned upside-down when he’s saddled with a straight-arrow rookie partner (Iris Bahr) and assigned the biggest case of his career: investigating an outbreak of mysterious food poisonings at the city’s swankiest restaurants. Infuriating restaurateurs with his bad manners, Larry still manages to charm a sweet, shy waitress (Megyn Price) into a budding romance. But when his unorthodox methods cost him his job, Larry has to go undercover to bring the conspirators to justice and ‘Git-R-Done!’

Stay Alive – March 24, 2006. Rated PG-13 (for horror violence, disturbing images, language, brief sexual and drug content). The Tagline: You Die In The Game – You Die For Real.

After the mysterious brutal death of an old friend, a group of teenagers find themselves in possession of “Stay Alive,” a next generation horror survival videogame based on the spine-chilling true story of a 17th century noblewoman known as “The Blood Countess.” The gamers don’t know anything about the game other than they’re not supposed to have it… and they’re dying to play it. Not able to resist temptation, the group begins to play the grisly game and soon a chilling connection is made – they are each being murdered one-by-one in the same method as the character they played in the game. As the line between the game world and the real world disappears, the group must find a way to defeat the vicious and merciless Blood Countess, all the while trying to… STAY ALIVE.

Your best bet this weekend is as followed:

1. Inside Man
2. V for Vendetta — That is, if you haven’t seen it.
3. 16 Blocks — Better catch it before it’s too late # 1.
4. Madea’s Family Reunion — Better catch it before it’s too late #2.

Best to aviod unless you enjoy PG-13 horror or southern fried humor:

1. Stay Alive
2. Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector
