Invasion – Recap – Episode 1-19

Archive

I was fairly pleased with the recap format from last week. The show helped a lot by keeping the 3 main plots of the episode almost entirely separate. Larkin was the only character who even turned up in more than one of the arcs and she only did that in one scene.

This week however, the arcs are much more integrated so it’s not really possible to utilize the format this time around. So it’s back to the old format for now until I come up with another way to handle the recaps.

This week we open with Russ searching Jesse’s room for something. Jesse hears someone in his room and grabs his trusty gun. Russ grabs his hand as he’s picking up the gun and starts yelling at him (Jesse’s revelation that the gun’s not loaded does little to calm him). Larkin told Russ about Jesse’s drunken gunplay and he’s understandably unhappy. Jesse responds by complaining about Russ’s recent absence and the hybrid’s behavior. At the end of the argument, after some going over the origin of the gun again, Russ storms off with the gun, ignoring Larkin’s questions.

Over at the Underlay residence, Tom is woken by a noise. It turns out that Mariel is scrubbing the floor of his storage closet in a rather obsessive sort of way. Kira calls Lewis to talk to him about her mother’s behavior. She tells Lewis that she misses him and he tells her while he hasn’t done anything like Mariel’s doing, he’s also been feeling anxious lately.

The doorbell rings and Tom is surprised to find Russ. Russ is rather upset and wants to talk to Tom. Once he and Tom are away from the house, he says that Zura is a murder and that he’s killed at least four people, including two that Tom sent to the island. Tom seems surprised to find out that Zura killed Derek and Christina.

Even though Tom doesn’t seem to like this new Zura related news, Russ is still in a bad mood. He and Tom trade a punch and then Russ throws the gun into the woods. Tom tells Russ that the military have been aware of the hybrids since 1996. Russ tells Tom he knew this and mentions Zura’s connections with the military. Tom is not happy about this either; Russ says he’s sending a team to deal with Zura in the morning.

Meanwhile, on the island, Zura is giving a speech about instinct to the hybrids. He says they are threatened and the time has come to take advantage of their abilities.

The following morning Tom and Lewis set out for the island in search of Zura. Russ on the other hand isn’t getting to set out on his on search. The chief is apparently close to Mr. Zura and after talking with Sheriff Underlay, they decided not to apprehend Zura. In addition, Russ has been put on administrative leave. Mona is much to blame for this; she says she wanted to protect Russ and his family because she doesn’t think there’s anything he can do to stop whatever is happening.

At the school cafeteria we learn that Brett has moved up from sleeping in his car to staying at his grandmother’s house (which has been condemned since the hurricane). The hybrids are laughing at Jesse and Brett and Jesse doesn’t take it very well. He sits down with some other non-hybrids and they talk about all the bad things that hybrids are doing. Kira comes over and says that not all hybrids are bad, a lot of them are just scared. Jesse and his friends don’t appreciate this outlook however. Jesse seems to think that all the problems in the town are Tom’s fault.

Later in the day, Brett tells Jesse that they need to talk to Tom and find out how to stop this. Jesse doesn’t think Tom wants it to stop but Brett says he has some people who are willing to help that are good at getting people to talk. Jesse hesitates but after Brett reveals that Brett’s mom has been kicked out now as well, he agrees.

Tom and Lewis have made it to the island but are surprised to find it is completely deserted. There’s lots of evidence they were there, but nobody is there now.

Back in town, Dave and Larkin are talking about Zura’s book. It apparently uses a number of quotes from the old testament and is big on the Robin Hood stuff. Dave figures out that the parallel to Sherwood Forest must be the water (which explains why Zura was monitoring it). Just after he figures this out, there’s a storm alert on his laptop. There’s a storm developing in the Carribbean and if another hurricane hit Homestead, it’d be the perfect cover for an invasion.

Russ is over at the Underlay’s again. He tells Mariel about his suspension and says that he’s thinking of leaving town for a while and wants to take the kids with him. He then invites Mariel to come with them to get away from whatever is happening. Mariel asks if Tom’s invited too and Russ implies he’s behind whatever is happening. Mariel yells at Russ to get out of her house.

After being kicked out by his ex-wife, Russ returns home to his current wife. He tells Larkin about his suspension. When Larkin tells Russ that Jesse is out at a friend’s Russ goes to find him. As he’s leaving Larkin confronts him about his constantly running off without providing an explanation. She tells Russ that he isn’t the only one who’s holding things together so he needs to stop acting like he is. Russ apologizes to Larkin for his behavior and she provides a phone number of Brett’s parents to assist Russ in tracking them down.

Speaking of Jesse, he, Brett and a couple other guys are currently en route to meet up with the people who have Tom. Brett says they told him that they just wanted to talk to Tom and Tom agreed to come along.

When they arrive at their destination (Brett’s grandmother’s house) the two guys who were supposed to get the Sherrif are sitting by the debris-filled (but otherwise empty) pool. When asked where the sheriff is, they say he’s in the pool. He came along willingly but didn’t want to give up his gun when they got there so it was taken from him. They also weren’t able to get the sheriff so they grabbed Lewis instead.

Lewis has taken up residence in the pool and is looking rather battered and unconscious. Jesse wants to take Lewis to the hospital, the two assailants won’t tell Jesse what they did with the radio so Jesse tries to use his cellphone. They spray Jesse with some sort of hose, presumably ruining his cellphone. Brett complains and gets thrown in the pool with Jesse.

The men starts hassling the other two people who came with Brett and Jesse. While they are distracted Jesse pops out of the pool and hits one of them with some kind of metal pipe. Jesse grabs Lewis’ gun and demands to know where the radio is. One of the men runs off so Jesse beats on the other one and repeats his demand. Russ shows up and sees Jesse holding a gun to the guy’s head.

Back at the Underlay’s it seems that Mariel has stocked the storage closet full of water, batteries and the like. Kira asks Tom is she knows something that they don’t know.

A little while later Lewis in the hospital while Tom and Mariel look over him. It is acknowledged that Jesse wanted to stop what happened but if Russ hadn’t come along, who knows what would have happened? Tom tells Mariel that things are going to get worse before they get better. He says that water and batteries aren’t going to stop it but Mariel says they help her.

Kira arrives at the hospital in time to look at Jesse, look angry and then continue on down the hall. Russ talks to Jesse about what happened. Russ says that Mariel is still his mom and still loves him, no matter what. Jesse says that he doesn’t want to live in town anymore and Russ lets him know that he was already thinking of leaving town, especially since he was more or less fired from his job.

Tom enters the room to talk to Russ. Jesse takes the opportunity to apologize to Tom about the incident, and Tom accepts. Tom wants to show Russ something and the two leave the hospital together.

Tom drives Russ to a gas station where a bunch of people are stocking up on supplies. Tom says they are all hybrids. All the major groceries stores have already been cleaned out, the hybrids don’t know a hurricane is coming but they feel it. Tom says he’s not worried about those hybrids, he’s worried about the rest of them. Tom needs help to stop Zura and help the humans and the hybrids learn to co-exist. He’s short on people he can trust and wants Russ to help him.

The conversation is interrupted by a phone call from Zura. He says that he knows Russ is with Tom and that he wants to meet Tom tomorrow at breakfast.

When Zura hangs up the phone, he returns it to Kira, thanks her for loaning the phone and says something somewhat ominous. Fortunately for Zura, Tom couldn’t be bothered to look at the call display before he answered the phone or else he probably would have already figured out where Zura was.

A solid episode tonight as we build to the season finale. We’ve apparently got a hurricane on the way which I imagine will be playing heavily into the season finale.

I particularly liked the non-hybrids acting like assholes as well. And if you’re going to have the humans acting like jerks and doing nasty stuff, Lewis is the perfect victim. He’s got that whole naive innocence thing with his devout religious attitude (oddly enough, he’s almost obsessively religious and yet DOESN’T seem to belong to any of those wacky Christian groups) on the go that makes him a great target to be brutalized if you want to drum up sympathy for the hybrid side of things.

Things are definitely shaping up for an exciting conclusion to the season.
